Will We See US Airlines Order More Boeing?

Tue Sep 18, 2001 1:12 am

Once things balance out in the future ahead, in terms of air travel, will U.S. airlines feel more persuaded to buy Boeing rather than Airbus because it wants to be percieved as "buying American?" Additionally, it would want to feel as if they are helping the economy. . .etc.

This is not a A vs. B post.

But in the long term. . .will US airlines feel more inclined to buy Boeing products to show the American public that they are "helping our economy?"

I've been sensing a "buy American" attitude coming about pretty strong in the last few days. I'm just pondering the thought of more orders for Boeing. . .being US-based and all.

Will this turn the 717 program around in the next few years, and so on. . .

We have to look long term. . .

There are many airliners that will need replacing over the next few years, even if the airlines are running at 80%. Machinery will always need to be updated. Orders will come in, maybe not now, but they will. . .

If US airlines buy new aircraft again they will do it the same way as they have done it so far. AA, CO, DL will go on to order Boeing only, UA and NW will order both and US and HP will probably order only Airbus. There is no reason to change, as most airlines have long before decided which way to go, which types to order.
UA won't replace all A32S with B737NG, and NW, US and HP won't do that toor.

Udo,

I tend to agree with you. What about the airlines that haven't made up their minds, or the ones that order A & B A/C?

How would the American public perceive an order from a US airline for "30 Airbus Jets" headlining every business paper while the US economy is struggling?

If they will recive federal help (money, tax cutting and so on..), how they couldn't help American economy??

That's only my thinking, but I will not surprise to see more new Boeing order.

Do you think NW will keep its A330 order??

I do not think so. Airbusses are produced in Europe (not by the Taliban!) and contain a lot of US technologies and parts. US airlines will buy whatever planes makes most sense for them economically.

MAC100:
That was hilarious!  Laugh out loud

I don't see why this tragedy would start a 'buy American' attitude among corporate big wigs. If creating jobs or supporting the US economy was a factor, then they wouldn't be laying off so many 'Americans' from there jobs.

Things will go back to 'business as usual'.

The last thing you will see in the next few months is ANY commercial aircraft order. The majors will be sending aircraft to Arizona as fast as they can...

When Americans see big businesses ordering billions of dollars of A/C from an overseas A/C manufacturer, the normal reaction from the US workforce is; "What the hell you talkin' about? Whadya mean ordered overseas, when we need the work income here in America?"

Nutshell: Boeing order, all Americans happy. Airbus order, most Americans not happy.

To the average person who DOESN'T know about international A/C building, they stick with what they do know: Boeing is American & Airbus is somewhere else.

I'll say it again,

LONG TERM. Meaning in the YEARS ahead, not months & not days.

Ahhhh. . .forget it.

You all have valid points. I didn't mean any offense. . .

This rampant and fundamental American Patriotism will not last forever and I expect that the airlines will buy the aircraft that best meet their specifications, a/c that they get a "good deal" on and ones that meet their fleet needs, be them Boeing or Airbus.

I do hope that the airlines do their business in a way that will benefit their bottom line rather than make fleet decisions based on what the public might perceive as being "American".
