Detroit Plane Spotting

Wed Sep 19, 2001 6:20 am

Is there any good plane spotting places at Detroit Airport and if so where? I will be moving there soon.
And what do you typically see at DTW?

If anyone knows, please help

I actually emailed the airport about it, and the lady that responded said the best place is on the roof of the parking for in the terminal, don't expect to get past sercurity w/o a ticket..

Lets do some sexy math. We add you, subtract your clothes, divide your legs and multiply

Hey Buddy,
Welcome to Detroit, my hometown. Actually, I'm away at school right now, but anyways

The best spotting in DTW is from the 6th floor roof of the parking deck. Get a good view of approach of 21R, 21 C & 21 L. Get excellent view of aircraft taxiing to depart and on runway 21C and rotation view on 3C. I dunno how that will be with the current security situation. Its far enough away from restrcited areas I don't think it'll be much of a problem, but the worst you they can do is probably stop you and tell you to leave.

We'll see what new opportunites are created when the new midfield terminal opens in January, and how the new runway patterns will change when 4/22 opens in December

Off-airport, there are some good spots in some of the hotel parking lots off of Meriman Road. I can't think of the name of the one that's right next to I-94 right now, but those are only good on days when landings are to the south.

Oh yeah, it terms of aircraft: who knows now after last week...

NW's largest hub: tons of DC-9's, 319's, 320's, 757
a good number of DC-10 (both Atlantic '30's and Domestic '40's), 744's, occasional 742 (passenger & cargo)
Mesaba's Hub with tons of Saab 340's, and ARJ's
Express I has the CRJ's for NWAirlink

Other Domestic:

AA: MD-80's, F-100's, 738, 727, & ERJ (Eagle) ORD, DFW, MIA, LGA
UA: 727, 733, 757, CRJ (sometimes 735's or 767's) ORD, DEN, IAD
DL: MD-80's, 733, 757, 763's ATL, CVG, SLC
TW: MD-80's, 717, DC-9's (while they're still around) STL
CO: MD-80's, 733, 735, 738, ATR's CLE, EWR, IAH
Spirit: MD-80's
US: 733's, F-100's, 734's, DH8's CLT, PIT, PHL
SW: 737's

KLM: I believe KLM stopped flying one of the DTW-AMS's routes for the time being
LH: 340 or 747 from FRA
BA: 747 or 777 from LHR
AC: I believe they're flying a turboprop here now from YYZ

Ditto for the deck... it's the best place besides the International terminal, which you won't be able to access since you have to pass security.

Up, up and away!

ahhhh....Motown! My hometown...I've got 93 octane in my blood. A born car guy..Detroit Rocks

graduated from WSU also.

I agree, the roof of the garage. I visited my town back in January. If I'd had more time to hang out up there I could have gotten some good pics!

I did manage to walk around the terminals & concourses. You can get some good shots from there too. But you'll have to have a ticket now
