Alitalia Cut Jobs And Flights

Thu Sep 20, 2001 5:37 pm

Also Alitalia (which sure it wasn't in a good financial situation before that this tradegy happened) will cut jobs and flights.

They are planning to cut 3000 jobs (they are 24000) and they will reduce flights to North America and Middle East by 5% effective from 1 January 2002.

Also they want to put out from their fleet as soon as possible all the 9 B747/200B still flying in AZ colours.

Tomorrow morning after a meeting with the major stake holders (the Italian govern) they will show to the financial analysts which others measure they will plan to follow in order to affront this crisis.

They are in a real big trouble if they don't recive as soon as possible some pubblic help (tax payer money).

The B777 they have already ordered won't be surplus, as they are going to replace the soon-to-be-retired 742? AZ still lacks aircraft for long haul flights, that means they are going to write off most of the intercontinental routes? What will remain... NRT, KIX (?), HKG, a few flights towards JFK/EWR (with wich load factor?), SFO, maybe LAX...
Seems they'll have hard times... like anyone anywhere.

They don't operate that many flights to the US in the first place, and they are succsesful and long-established at all thier 8 North American destinations. What I could see happening:

1) Cutting one of the two-daily JFK-FCO flights
2) Maybe going back to the old ways at MIA; instead of the daily MD-11 to MXP, they could revert to the 5x weekly 742 to MXP (MoWeFr) and FCO (TuTh)
3) Reduce frequencies on FCO-YYZ
4) Reduce frequenices on MXP-BOS
5) Delay ATL flights

They have not added a US destiantion, I think, since MIA, which was added in 1990, and they operate Alitalia TEAM flights to cities like MIA, LAX, and SFO, which allows them to operate lower-yield routes while still making a profit.

They add SFO since June 1999 and Newark since 1994, first with a code sharing with CO and recently they fly this routes from MXP and FCO with their own aircraft.

The AZ financial situation is very bad cause they have either a large long and short term debits and they have few cash.

Alitalia USA routes are their most profitable intercontinental routes in their network. I doubt they will be downgraded. I see a reduction in Middle East and Asia flights. They need to expand their long-haul fleet if they want to be more competitive. Alitalia is making good money here at SFO. We expect a 777 in 2002.

Michael SFO,

write me at: tequilafuego@excite.it

Ps: Yes AZ have a great load factor on Italy-US flights (88,1% this summer), but unfortunately due to their operative high cost, these routes aren't so profitable as everybody usually think.
But I agree that MXP-SFO is one on the most succesfull route started by AZ in the last decade.

Airblue, that's why Alitalia has Alitalia TEAM running flights to MIA, SFO, and LAX (and BOS??). It allows Alitalia to operate flights that make lower yields at a profit.

You are right Mah, but also AZ team has high operative cost.
In fact AZ today flyes only the B747/200B fleet and some MDD-80. All the other planes are operated by the subsidarie AZ team, AZ express and AZ Cargo. Also in order to operate as more as flights outside of Milan LIN (where there are some limitations) some AZ domestic flights from LIN are operate by the charter division Eurofly.

Toronto isn't another profitable route? I've often seen photos of AZ B742 in Toronto here on Airliners.net, so should be enough pax to use a jumbo... even I still asking myself why, I don't think there's a so strong Italian community in Canada...
Does anybody know something more about it?

Thanx
