Fatal Car Crash On Airport Runway

Sat Sep 22, 2001 11:56 am

This is an interesting one - from www.nzcity.co.nz FYI, Gisborne airport is a small regional airport here in NZ.

-------
Police are yet to reveal why a car involved in a fatal accident this morning was travelling on the Gisborne Airport runway.

A 39-year-old Levin man died when the vehicle he was sitting in as the front seat passenger was unable to stop.

It is believed he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Three other people were in the car and suffered minor to moderate injuries.

Police say investigations are continuing, and will not say why the car was on the airport tarmac.

OMG...I used to live in Gisborne and visited the airport many times as a child...even had a run down the runway in a fire truck.

Gisborne has to have one of the most unique runways in the world, it has a railway line crossing right through the runway.

But this accident sounds really biazzre.

I know I have an ancient postcard somewhere which depicts a train stopped in front of the runway crossing with a DC-3 ready to takeoff. I'll see if I can dig it out and scan it for you.

And by the way, the trains have to give way to air traffic  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well, when I was in high school, a friend of mine INSISTED that at night you could drive on the runways at the New Orleans Lakefront airport. Luckily, I didn't trust his opinion, and we never did it. Of course, the guy at Gisborne was 39 years old, so I'm not sure what his excuse could possibly be. Inebriation?

'Inebriation'? - you have to wonder, huh? Here's an update, but they still haven't said why it was there.

By the way - great picture CPDC10-30.

-------------
Police have named a man killed when the car he was in drove off the end of the runway at Gisborne airport early on Saturday.
Ross Kenneth Burgess, 38, of Levin, was a front seat passenger and appeared not to have been wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed about 2am, Gisborne police said.

The vehicle left the end of the runway, crashed through a fence and crossed a road bordering the airport before landing on its side and roof.

A 37-year-old woman was treated for moderate spine and shoulder injuries. A 37-year-old man and 26-year-old woman had moderate injuries.

Senior Sergeant Tony Gibson of Gisborne police told NZPA today an investigation into the crash was still being carried out and no charges had been laid.

Police have not yet been able to say why the car was on the runway.

An airport spokesman said no flights were disrupted because of the accident.

The man killed when a car rolled at high speed at the end of the Gisborne airport runway early on Saturday morning has been named.

He was Ross Kenneth Burgess, 38, of Levin. Mr Burgess's wife and a 37-year-old Gisborne mechanic and his 26-year-old girlfriend were injured in the crash.

It is understood the four had been at a bar in Gisborne and gained access to the runway because the mechanic worked at the airport.

Police say excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Detective Dean Story said police were examining the car and waiting for results of tests.

The car, a 1993 Commodore SS, overshot the runway and skidded nearly 200 metres before crashing through a fence, crossing Awapuni Rd and landing on its side and roof.

The airstrip is no stranger to night activity – people are known to drive there to shoot rabbits and hares or chase them in their cars.

So will the car be considered "totalled" or "written off"?
