The Best Airport For Plane Spotting

Mon Sep 24, 2001 4:18 am

What airport, in your opinion, has the best areas for plane spotting. In each airport, where is that spot.

I like Pittsburgh for Plane Spotting. I've only been to 4 different airports though. Pittsburgh has about 3 good spots. One is ressurection cemetary(rwy32-14). Another good one is that you get off at the next exit after the airport exit. This is Runway 10L-28R! They usually take off at that spot, if not they land on the other side of the runway!

The one without fences around the entire perimeter, where you get ramp access without problem, where there is noone telling you that you are too close to the runway. It's also visited by all possible aricraft, from all the airlines of the world. It always has good weather, and the sun in the right position. I can't remember the name because I always wake up wanting to go spotting...

SHARJAH in the UAE. You can get full access to the ramp for US$60.

I live in AMS so I say AMS.
You can stand at R/W 01L at Mc Donalds there. They have made it as a spotarea there. It's really nice when there is heavy crosswinds cause you really get a good look at the crabangle when they are on final.
When in doubt, flat out!

CGK, Jakarta Intl.
Venture into the small lanes next to the runway fence (2 runways), and you'll find a man hole in the fence... then the only thing separating you and the aircraft is just a drainage ditch !

You get 732s that you can't find anywhere else but SIN (which is not very spotter friendly), heaps (too many) of Garuda, Fokkers of Merpati... and some of the usual Intl visitors...

AMS Schiphol Airport almost totally surrounded by drainage ditches, so very less fences. Many runways, busy. Dramatic and typical Dutch cloudy skies. In autumn, winter, spring and sometimes in summer you have to cloth yourself well due to the windy sea climate.

It is. Singapore is cool because I always see airplanes land and Take-off at the TV lounge in T2. Big thumbs up

BWI has a nice public observation viewing park just less then a mile from RWY 33L. Best to go in the afternoon when the sun is behind ya.

SUDDEn, that's 27 and 22 (plus arrivals at 24 in the distance).
Closest McD to 01L is a good 5 minutes away by car  Smile/happy/getting dizzy and unofficial (very nice place to see the planes coming over the A4 motorway).

One thing I don't like too much about AMS is the way in which ATC keeps changing the active runways every few minutes  Nuts

Me too, I like AMS. Like mentioned above, the McD at 27-09 is great, but also the road parallel to 01L/19R, the parking space next to 06/24, and also the road crossing the extended centerline of 24, where you can stand between the approach lights.
Another great spot is the quiet road crossing the extended centerline of 01L. If you climb in the approach lights here (I guess that is actually forbidden), you can get some great shots.
Sudden, are you a load master for KLM? I have worked for KLM as a baggage medewerker (?) for 2,5 years. I worked about everywhere, in the C,D,E and F-pier.

Brussel?!?!?!? I have been there once and I didn't like it at all. I haven't been alongside the runways though. Just in the terminal and near the fences at the apron.

I like Amsterdam better. Dusseldorf is also very good. Especcially the railwaystation. BTW the spottersites at DUS are open again. At AMS they haven't opened yet.

Someone mentioned ramp acces at Sharjah, that is impossible for now. To quote the director general (Dr. Ghanem Al-Hajri):
"Owing to stringent security considerations, we regret to inform you that no ramp access will be permitted for photography purposes for an indefinite period of time."

AUS is small and it sucks. My vote goes to Miami.

Petertenthije: I agree, the terminal isn't very good for spotting, the top floors of the parkinghouses can be good sometimes. And along side runway 07R-25L (both for takeoff and landing) is very good. The end of runway 25R can be good if there is a real heavy aircraft taking of or if you have a long enough lense.

My vote goes for SAN

Very intesting approach...I haven't found a much better place than the Windsock, great little bar/restaurant with GREAT views of incoming and departing aircraft. No more than 50 Ft from the runway. Not many heavies though. Also some great spots in Balboa park to watch incoming aircraft.

Zurich, Switzerland is great! You have dozens of excellent locations to choose from. On top of fingerdock Terminal B, near the runways, and many more. As I am not a die-hard spotter, I do not know of the insider spots. If you want more information on Zurich, contact Gerardo, he's the guy to ask.

Until the expansion about 10 years ago, I would of said ROC, but there was approximately 12 to 15 years ago a secluded road that lead just short to the runway (having not been to that spot since the late 80's, I'm not sure if that road is accessible anymore, especially in this day and age.)

USAirBWI:
I suppose by way of your user name, that you are from Baltimore. When I visited BWI airport, I really didnt explore much through all the concourses but rather stayed in concourse "D" Usairways land. I really liked the spot down beyond the escalatators near the commuter terminal, that area was dead and you could, then , spot for hours, a great get away spot. I suppose those days are temporarally gone, unless of course you have a ticket. If you are from BWI, go check out the spot I am referrering to, on your next trip.
Happy flying.

All time favourite was Kai Tak Airport, but of course that is irrelevant now. But my favourite has either got to be Sydney Kingsford Smith, Or Los Angeles International. LAX just has so many great spots to shoot from, and such a great variety!! Sydney just seems to be much more enjoyable then LAX. I love both equally! many thanks to the guys down there that have helped me experience SYD for what it is! Also Tokyo Narita can be pretty enjoyable as well!

Cheers!

Christchurch is good it is just the lack of airlines, if more airlines flew into CHC then it would be better.

DCA - But Closed For Now

Thu Sep 27, 2001 12:43 am

Gravelly Point, on the north end of the runway has a nice-sized parking area.
You can seen the entire airport. If planes
come in from the north for a landing, they
fly only a couple of hundred feet off the
top of your head.

Unfortunatelly, DCA remains the only
airport in the free world that's shut down.

PPT !!!
Light is wonderful.
And if you are lucky, you will see an AF 744 or an HAwaian DC10 swimming in Tahiti lagoon.

Unless things have changed as a result of 9/11/01, HNL is great for spotting. MIA is also good, as you usually have a wide assortment of aircraft based there. Gravelly Point was certainly a favorite spot for DCA.

Yes, I know about that spot. It's a great place. In fact, I saw my first DC-10 from there (Ghana Airways). I was referring to other airports since I don't have a chance to travel much.

Well, i have visited many airports, to just go and watch aircraft come in and out it would have to be LHR, just because of the variety and that you get a clear view of 27L from the Queens building.

If there was more traffic at BRS, that'd be my favourite for just watching, sitting in the Lay-by round the back of the airport is just so beautiful and peaceful.

AMS is still my favourite though, and my favourite spot there is parallel to the Zwanenburgbaan where you have a clear unobstructed view of the whole runway, and quite close too!!!

No more than 50 Ft from the runway

Woah, slight Exaggeration there i think, if you were that close you would be hit by the wingtips of A320's and 757's, or smashed by the engines of a 747!!!!

I'd say that the closest a spot could be to a runway is 200m+ so there is not enough jetblast to knock you over, not to mention wings!!!!

The best spot at BRS is about 200ft from a Taxiway, its so close because the only aircraft that use it are no bigger than a 757, where the wings are nearly over the fence (which is only 4ft high!).

Regards

Dan
