Latest Delta Airlines News

Mon Sep 24, 2001 4:45 am

Hey Y'all
This all comes from my father who is a mechanic for Delta. He inturn got it from his boss.
We all know Delta announces lay-offs tomorrow. Part of this stems form the fact that about 100 planes are being parked tomorrow in the desert. Delta wll park all of the 727s, all of the MD-90s and 3 MD-11s. The 727s will not return and the MD-90s and MD-11s will come back as needed. Delta Express will also park some 737-200s. No one is sure what will happen to Shuttle. This could all change by tomorrow but this is what he was told by his boss. Ill miss the 727!

Wow...all of the 727s...I never really liked em anyways...and just think what it will do for their avg fleet age!  Big thumbs up Seriously though, that's really hard to believe. About the MD-11s, do you think that they will downgrade the MD-11 from ATL-LAX? I always fly that flight and love the MD-11...I guess it depends if they cut the LAX-NRT route. Does anyone know all of the routes that they are cutting? I heard that they are cutting/postponing Zurich, Tel Aviv, and Dubai.

Hi:

Finally we have news from Delta. I'm sure about the retirement of the 727-200 Adv, now step by step Delta will replaced the 727-200Adv by newest 737-800 with less cost. By by 727, we'll miss you.
About Delta Shuttle, it's probably that Delta maintain a limited schedule for a short time.

Why is everyone in a rush now to park their old jets?

i know load factors are down...but why are they specifically targeting older jets like the 727...DC10...etc

They could probably use their 727s because the capacity is less than their bigger jets. Why don't they park some 767s?

And NWA, with all their old dc9s, they could just park the whole airline!

Hi again:

Are you sure about the temporally ground of the MD-11? I think that Delta will need to serve the routes to Asia, the high density routes to Europe and to restart the Middle East routes.

They park the old jets because they are less efficient (fuel economy, maintenance, etc...) than the newer jets.

All of the DL 727’s are to be retired tomorrow? I knew it would be a sad day when the last 727 left DL’s fleet but I never imagined it would be anything like this. I just flew on DL’s N8889Z ship #440 a week ago today on flight 2184 MEM-CVG. It was a beautiful flight however there were only about 4 revenue passengers on the flight. The head flight attendant let everyone sit in first class so I sat in 1A. I had no idea that would be my last DL727 flight. The reason I was on that flight was because I had been trying to fly out to Calgary Canada on 9-11 & I was airborne aboard N144DA a 767-300 flight DL571 CVG-SLC during the terrorist attack. We were diverted to KCI & I was stuck there for two days before renting a card & driving to MEM where I stayed with friends for another several days before flying home on 9-16. What a sad sad end to the DL 727 fleet. What will become of the DL727 flight & cabin crews? With the bailout being approved you’d think the airlines could better afford to take a more gradual approach to scaling back service. All those who were involved in perpetrating the terrorist acts on 9-11-2001 and those who support them had better be brought to justice soon!

God bless the victims of 9-11-2001!

I don't understand how some think this is unbelievable, there has been A LOT of unbelievable events lately...the tragedies in NY,DC,and PA, and then mass lay-offs, to suddenly retire aircraft which were already to be retired doesn't surprise me.

That seems like a huge number of aircraft, all of the 727S plus the MD90? We are talking about a cutback in excess of 20% which seems to be what most airlines are doing.

It is likely that some MD11s may be pulled from service as DL has suspended flights to the Middle East for the time being.

As for DL Express, which has a niche in the Florida vacation market, if people are not interested in flying to vacation destinations, it would make sense that operations for this division would be affected.

Out with the 727, in with the 717 from AirTran. I cannot stand those MD88's DL uses. Too cramped.

Huh?

I'd like to know where that information came from because I've seen nothing on that (this is being entered from the ATL pilot crew lounge).

I seriously doubt the validity.

While I hate to use superlatives, I'd have to say this is pretty close to impossible.

Co LITE... take your rhetoric somewhere else please. If you enjoy riding the DC-9-95, that's okay with all of us, but that's not relevant to the topic of discussion here.

Just in case you are interested, I like AirT85 have a relative that works for Delta. Unlike AirT85 this is what my husband has been told(he, if you guys don't know by now is a supervisor in Customer Service and his info comes from the Station Manager and company teletype). There aren't enough 737's now to man all the Express flights so they haven't been told of any of their flights being cancelled(yes, he works for the Express division), MD-11's are needed for the Pacific service, there really aren't enough777's for that, some of the MD-90's yes and the 727's yes. As far as employee staffing, there aren't any scheduled for furlough right now. Instead they are going to offer early retirements and leave of absences as incentives to not have to further reduce their staffing. They also anticipate many of their pilots that are in the reserves being called up to active duty, which of course would reduce any excess there. By the way, none of this will definately happen Monday, the teletype said that if if happens it would be by Wednesday. Let us all hope that none of this does happen but if it has to, let if not be for a long time. God bless America!

Well although you may have been entering your comment from a DL pilot lounge...the employees at DL as of now (see time of this post) still have not heard what sort of staff reductions will take place either, so I would imagine that an aircraft accelerated retirement plan which may happen with this staff reduction wouldn't be announced until DL has ironed-out the specifics. I have first hand experience that the airline workers are sometimes not the first to hear what is happening/has happened at their company.

I am not lying to you about any of this. This is what my father was told by his boss. This information came to him Friday so it could have been updated. BUt apparently yes the 727s are being parked and MD-90s too. He was told 3 MD-11s are being parked but i'll have to ask him on that. And i would like to clarify the fact I AM NOT LYING TO YOU. K? so unless you work for Delta, please be quiet =)

wow! some people get real bitchy in here! This is the "perfect" time to get rid of older and oddball planes in your fleet. fleet rationalizaion plays a big part in airline finances. look how many types US had for awhile.
as opposed to WN, which has 4 variants of the same basic type. (737-200/300/500/700)

In other Delta news, the new issue of Time reports that several Delta flights may have also been targets for a second wave of attacks several hours after the attacks in NYC and DC. And flights at another unspecified airline were possible targets as well. So we can thank the FAA for shutting down the system, so more flights would not have been turned into bombs. This news comes on the heels of a report that Atlanta was a possible target on the 11th as well, so possibly Delta's own planes could have been used in an attack on Atlanta.

About the DL 727-200s, people put them down, but if you were lucky enough to ride in F class, they had a nice arrangement up there, especially rows 3 and 4, behind the galley. It was like having your own little enclave, definitely a choice seating area. The F class seats were wide and really cushy too.

Between the facts that 1) 727-200's have 35-45% higher seat-mile costs than a 737-800, 2) they don't meet ICAO Stage III noise standards and 3) are getting costly to maintain, no wonder DL is retiring their 722 fleet early.

I thought that DL's hushkitted 722's were Stage III compliant...

If Delta is retiring all of it's 727s, what will they use on the ALB to ATL and ALB to CVG routes? I sure hope it will be the 737-800 or 757. With Delta Express, they should replace their 737-200s with 737-300s.

Going along with TEDSKI what are they gonna do? I live in Rochester and the flights to Atlanta are on B727's. That means when they leave United will be the only 727 opporator in ROC.

In response to the earlier post regarding the Time report:
RUMOR CONTROL: AIRCRAFT SECURITY. There have been multiple media reports in
recent days regarding airport and aircraft security, some of which have
identified DL as being involved. For example, today's edition of Time
Magazine reports that a "knife-like weapon" was discovered on two separate
DL aircraft on Sept. 11. Putting aside Time's sensational coverage, here are
the facts: Standard sweeps of DL aircraft on Sept. 12 revealed the presence
of a small Swiss Army knife on one aircraft, and a mini-pocket knife on
another. In both cases, the items had apparently slipped behind seat
cushions.

As of today (9/24), Delta still shows B727 on the ALB-ATL & ALB-CVG routes. So, unless they just haven't updated the CRS I'd say the 72's are still flying.

Can Anyone Answer My Question?

Tue Sep 25, 2001 4:21 am

Hi I have a question,
If Delta is getting rid of their 727's, then could or will I be on one on my flight in later February 2002 flight from ROC-ATL, ALT, ROC? Thanks

tbone202,

Well, if they do retire the 727's then (of course) you won't be on one but currently the sked for Feb '02 still shows B727 on the ROC-ATL route.

to AirT85:

Just because your Dad's boss said something doesn't make it a fact. I also work at the TOC in ATL. The rumors are flying every day. My take, Yes we will be retireing the 727 fleet earlier. Also more 737-200 may go away. Express service is showing a lot of cut backs for the Oct-Nov sked.
I don't know about the MD-11 cuts though. Some are due to be repainted this fall and the 777 fleet will be getting new crew rest mods done. These mods will be brought back in house as soon as possible. What kind of international lift we will need for the next few months is a real guess right now.
