I saw the 717 in flight!

Wed Oct 28, 1998 3:27 am

Yesterday when I was coming back from Baja California
I saw a the 717 in flight about 1,500 feet above me. We
were off the coast of Baja(15mi) near Tijuana. I was
on the same frequency he was on and his call sign
was "Boeing 717". He was headed to Yuma after doing
some test 75mi south of San Clemente Island. It was a
pleasent suprise to see him. The aircraft look real nice in
flight! Boeing colors.

The 717 is not beautiful, is it?
I don't like it. I'm persuaded it won't do well. It doesn't have many orders !
Why the hell did Boeing waste time and money in the 717? They didn't have to !

I like it! I think the airlines are just wating to see what happens.
If the airlines that ordered them are making $$$ you will see
other airlines step in line and order some. According to Airways
magazine Boeing is planning on making a shorter 717. (80seats)
We will wait and see, Boeing must of felt a need for regional jets
or it could have just focused on the back up in orders they
had last year. For you to say you don't think it's beautiful and
then say, is it? Is confusing to me! I think it looks crappy in
Boeing colors but it looks nice with Air Tran colors.

From pictures I've seen, it resembles a DC-9-30, which is a beautiful airplane. Will the shorter version look like a DC-9-10?

AA727: You keep saying that the DC-9/MD-80 is an ugly plane and now that the 717 is an ugly plane. What good will that do? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Why waste your breath making such negative comments. Boeing had ample reason to use money and time on the 717, which is that they didn't have a regional jet before the 717. The 717 will be superior in the regional market and just watch how successful it will become.

The 717 is poised to be a failure as a regional jet, due to the fact that it was not designed to be one. It has no short field capabilities like the AVRO's and Fokker70 have, it will consume more fuel than its competitors, and the regional jet market is getting full, with the new Bombardier RJ70,EMB145,Dornier-Jet,Avro, and their abreviated forms.
Even the tail engine design has proven unpractical.

MD-11: Yes, I keep saying that the DC-9/MD-80/717 are ugly airplanes (I'm just curious to know when American is gonna get rid of its 260 S80's). You complain that I've made negative comments about them but you should also notice that I've been making POSITIVE comments about your favourite aircraft: the MD-11.
I do love the DC-10 and MD-11.

Tino and all others who don't think the 717 will do well. I feel that Beoing is alot smarter then all of us here in the forum and have spent major bank reviewing this. If they think it will work I am sure it will. I also think you guys are looking at it's use only in the US but in Europe from London to Paris and other popular routes it will do well on. Also in Japan it will work well for there stuff.
