SQ New Business Class - Still On Track?

Wed Sep 26, 2001 7:00 am

Following the downturn in the airline industry after the events of 11/9, will SIA maintain the goal of fitting out its long haul fleet with the new Business Class product in 12 months. I may be flying SYD-SIN in mid January - what will be my chances of getting the new Biz Class. Also, has SIN-AKL route got the SkySuite First class yet?

Cheers

Re:Virgin Flyer
The planes would still go on,refitting with new business class seats......there won't be any changes so don't worry. As for the Skysuite, actually if you fly SIN - AKL Megatops that aren't SMA,SMC,SME,SMF,SMG,SMH then you'll be flying on the new skysuite. You'll never know if they'd change the plane,as for last month somebody checked for me that i was the Tropical Megatop (I mean with the new seats one) but when i was ready to board,it was SMC!And later i found out that it was because the 12 seat won't be enough,as there were 15 passengers in F on that flight! So ,wish you luck!

Actually it's nearly flat...just like the sky suite! And it says to be the flattest bed in Business class, and the widest seat pitch too!Not too sure about the configuration though, but the seating avaliability will reduce 8 seats comapring with the not-really-old Raffles Class!

Hear hear.

In fact, the recline is 173 - 177 degrees (i can't remember which!).

And when people talk about seat pitch. How can you have it! There is now no such thing with the SpaceBed.

The seat is 6ft 6" (3 - 6" more than some competitors), and 27" wide (6.5" wider than a competitor)

But, the best thing is it was designed by NASA! hehe

I can´t figure how SIA will manage to axe only 8 seats when fitting in the new ones without removing seats. I´d say that they have to remove some economy seats and relocate lavatories and galleys. Right now the upper deck seats 30. My best guess will be that it will have 24 of the new seats. On the main deck galleys and lavatories are removed so that there also can be 4 rows 6 abreast. That also 24 seats - 24 + 24 = 48 - 56 (existing config.) = -8!
But as said above this means relocating at least two forward lavatories and parts of the forward galley. This must lead to a reduction in the number of economy seats.

Anzett, As far as I read Singapore_Air´s notes he mentions nothing about flying New Raffles. He simply add - useful - information on the product. Of course he, if only 13-15 years of age, should concentrate on his school but don´t accuse him for saying things that he actually don´t. And by the way, as none of us are his parents shouldn´t we mind our own business...?

TR is absolutely right.

I heard they the spacebed will be fitted on the B777s too, how many seats are they going axe then? Will all of the B777s have it or is it just the SQ, SR or SV series?

thanks

Just the ER series......the normal 772 will not be installed,as now the 777-200's have 2 different kind of configurations, one has P12-J42-Y234 and one's got J30 and Y293.The ER's are now fitted with the J30-Y293 one,but from now on,all the new 772er's will be fitted with the new Spacebed to serve long haul routes.

I think that's quite reasonable actually!

Agree it is quite resonable. But well, something got me thinking into this. SMA, SMC, SME, SMF, SMG and SMH might have the spacebeds... well they cancelled future B744 orders and SIA said they are going to retire aircrafts later than planned, rather than to retrench people. My guess!

Why all these attacks on Singapore_Air. I am new to this forum, but have already read enough posts to see a lot of very unpolite posts to Singapore_Air. He is a kid, get a girl friend, do your homework etc. I think there would be many hobbies and activities that could be a lot worse than beeing interested in airlines and airliners.
To me Singapore_Air seems to be a pretty bright young man able to reason quite well and his posts here are often very informative.
I'am sure he does his homework and what do you know Anzett, maybe he already has a girlfriend.......

They aren't gonna refit their 1st gen. 744's at the moment. You've got your point actually.SMA,C,E,F,G,H might refit with spacebeds but I don't think SIA will spend money refitting the 6 planes. You know that costs a bunch! And needs time...i think they are planning to retire the old 744's later is because they'll wait till the A380 arrives. And that'd be around...5 years i guess! So is it really worth refitting the 1st generation B744's with new seats and equipments, and then retire them after the A380 arrives?I don't think SIA will do that...as the 1st generation 744 has their use too, like flying to short haul routes like Kuala Lumpur,Jarkata and they'll usually use the old 744's.That's why SIA never refitted with new seats!Because it's not really...economic efficiency to refit all the planes when your airline flies to some destinations that only needs around an hour!

But it's just my comment obviously...maybe they would change thier mind!

spk, you have your point too. Anyway I was kind of a disappointed when they cancelled the remaining orders for the B744s but glad too they did not cancel and B777s.

Well yeah...but just one actually! And they've already got this wonderful B744 fleet!

Also quite glad they didn't cut others...772,773,A345,A380!!

I wonder why they don't cut the A343...since they are sorta retiring them anyways and Boeing would purchase all the A340's!So strange......

Anzett - Please lay off Singappore_Air, especially in my threads. Its getting monotonous and annoying. As for your comment, well I am currently in my last year of school. I regularly travel in Business class, and occaisionally first. I traveled in first over ten years ago. When I was flying on Air New Zealand J class yesterday, there was a family with some young people. So, please don't generalise.

Getting back to this thread, any idea when the SYD-SIN route will get the Space Beds?

They've been using the Space Beds for more than a year!!!!When the Space Bed was released,SIN-SYD was one of the first route to use the New 744.

Every SQ B744s does visit Sydney. But from pictures and my friends, they seem to see more of the early SM series which will not have spacebeds in Sydney but as well as the newer B744s. Virginflyer, try not to take SQ 231 if you haven't decided, this flight is normally operated by the early SM series.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Anzett: I have not travelled Singapore Airlines First Class.

I was looking at SIA's seating plan for Megatops and I cannot imagine what the abreast-thingie will be. It should be interesting.

It wil be 2 - Something as on the SpaceBed picture.

The 777-200ER and 747-400s will get the SpaceBed as afore mentioned. However, I'm not sure if SIA will replace the ageing Megatops. Personally, i don't think it's economically viable and sensible, however it would add to passenger comfort which is what SIA's all about. I'm sure Cheong an co. will make the right decision.

Well, Kids can fly business class, i am not kid but i am only 21, and i flew business, it's not a big deal! I saw some real kids are flying in J class as well, there are many rich people or rich parents around. Did you ever see some kids drive Ferrari or Porsche? i mean those who are only 18! I know a few of those lucky kids. Are you surprised?

By the way i have some question, what is the difference between the first and latter generation 744? I never heard there's 2 generation 744!! And i doubt whether the SIA new business can b 27" wide, because seats in Cathay are 20.5 inches wide excluding the generous armrests and cocktail tray area.

Hi Cathay250, our 'first generation' B744s means here that the early B744s of SQ do not have the sleeper seats as in the other B744s and this time round most likely they won't get the spacebed too. They are the older B744s in the fleet.

Hope this helps

9v-spk

The new ER does not have 30J and 293Y.. they have a total of 298 seats - of which the actual break down I cant remember.

I guess they're fitting the new ER with less seats so that it can be lighter and therefore go faster than M.80!

Sorry I am obsessed with the stupidity of SQ 777s going at M.80.

Cathay250: Singapore Airlines confirms that their SpaceBed (designed by NASA), is 6ft 6" (or is it 5") long and 27" wide

If you would like the source, just tell me.

9v-spk,
I think I read somewhere on the SQ website that the 777ERs have 30 J and 255 Y rather than the 30 J 293 Y you mentioned. I've flown on this aircraft twice before and the ERs have more lavatories than the 30 J 293 Y series.

I am too quite sure the B777-212ERs have 30J and 255Y. This is then possible for them to promote wider seats and larger legroom.

Yep sorry folks you're right...They do have 30J just like the normal J's in 77 but only have 255Y...no wonder SIA told the media that there would be more legroom!

9v-spk and Mr. BA:

The J30/Y255 configuration is not that unusual. Malaysia Airlines 772s have P12/J33/Y233. However by removing the business class seats behind the second door, the confuguration would be something like P12/J21/Y260 or could be J33(or J30 if 6 abreast) and Y260. Korean Air also have Y260. Of course both Malaysia Airlines and Korean Air operates with 34 inches between the rows where SIA normally has 32 inches. This difference and various location of lavatories and galleys easily makes out the difference from 293 seats.

I´m happy that SIA finally might join ranks with the wonderful seat pitch of 34 inches! Actually the airline should have done that years ago if you ask me!

Cheers

Forgot to add....

that SIA also might relocate galleys and lavatories from the forward cabin to aft the second door to make room for New Raffles seats. Thereby the number of economy seats is reduced but no extra legroom!

I still hope that they will ad more space in economy... but let´s see

Is 27 wide is including the armrest and and cocktail tray area?
