MXP-SFO Suspended From Oct. 1st!

Thu Sep 27, 2001 7:53 pm

It is now confirmed: as of Oct. 1st Alitalia will stop flying the MXP-SFO. Sunday Sept. 30th the last scheduled 767 flight is set to depart from gate A10 at 3.35PM local time PST. I and in behalf of all the bay area residents hope to see Alitalia come back soon, hopefully next year.

MichaelSFO-

I hope you get AZ back soon. Luckily, I can still see their 747's come into JFK for a while. I, unlike most people LOVE Alitalia....

Most people discover how much miss a thing just when they lose it. Maybe AZ won't be the best airlines in the world, but many will miss the green-white-red A on the tail.

Very sad that AZ is going through the darkest time ever.

MXP Destiny Within A Year

Fri Sep 28, 2001 12:51 am

What's the destiny of MXP AZ's hub?? AZ is axing many routes of its (already not so big) intercontinental network (SFO, HKG are only few of the many), reducing flights on other destination (TLV, JFK), etc. Will MXP survive the next 2 years as hub?
I hope my question is clear.

Thanx

Alitalia is temporarily suspending services. They've done this before, will do it again in conditions warranting such reaction from what I understand.

Expect, once flying is norm and load factors increase once again, for AZ to....

a) Increase JFK frequency to normal levels
b) re-instate MXP-SFO, MXP-HKG, and possibly the Kangaroo route again.

742's will be gone by mid '02 having been replaced by 777's. As others are saying, I wouldn't expect LAX to be one of the first destinations. If load factors are up again, and AZ wished to re-instate MXP-SFO, Expect SFO and JFK to get the first 777 service. They'll need capacity on the MXP-JFK and FCO-JFK routes and w/o 747's they'll have to run two 763's. So, I'd expect 777's to fly daily to JFK at first.

As far as MXP being a hub or not, expect it will continue. FCO seems to be the target of more growth lately tho.

My opinion about MXP comes from some statistic fact:

North Italy generate 80% of all the Italians air traffic.
Milan area by its self generate 65% of all the business traffic.

From these numbers it's sure one thing: if you want to make money in Italy you have to be strong in the north Italy market.
LH was the first to understand that north Italy is a "cash cow" that why they bought a stake in Air Dolomiti to fedeer MUC from all the Italian airports.
Also SR and KL has a great fedeer from all the main Italian airports.
For AF Italy is the second largest market..... that's why an allince with AZ, to be stronger and compete better with LH.

If now AZ will lose more share market in Milan..... I really doubt they could be a really major anymore.

In the past MXP had a lot of problems, but now they are talking about third runway, third pier, terminal 2 rebuilding, new railways and high-way to get there faster.....

FCO is a good airport, but it misses the business traffic.....
