Revised Lufthansa Route Cuts

Fri Sep 28, 2001 10:20 pm

An AP article reports that Lufthansa has announced that it will raise ticket prices by $8 and take 26 planes out of service, resulting in a 20% reduction of transatlantic seating capactity. Route cuts were also announced in the article, although a few more were mentioned here than I think have been in on the message board, if I remember correctly:

"Lufthansa, Europe's No. 2 airline after British Airways, also said Friday that it would drop four of seven flights on its Frankfurt-Phoenix and Munich-Los Angeles routes as well as one of its seven weekly flights from Frankfurt to Atlanta.

It already had announced it was dropping its Berlin-Washington route and one daily flight from Frankfurt to New York and Frankfurt to Washington.

Lufthansa will continue to offer four flights a day to New York, it said."

This is a big blow to the Phoenix station. I'm not surprised though, as they compete with BA for Europe traffic, and don't have much feed aside from people who book through third enities who would put them on both LH and HP. I doubt BA will do anything to the PHX route because 1) They have already announced major route cuts, and 2) They have the America West codeshare operation out of PHX.

Also, although the article states that one of its dailies from Frankfurt to New York will be dropped, LH will continue to offer 4 flights a day to the NY area. What does this mean? Will LH drop a flight from JFK and add another one to EWR, or vice versa?

LH is dropping flights 406 and 407 ( FRA JFK) who started three summers ago only for the summer season and were leaving at 21.25 from FRA and 23.45 from JFK.

IN the fall-winter timetable those flights were mantained but with a different scheduled time.

LH mantains 4 flights a day to JFK:

from FRA
LH 400 to JFK
LH 404 to JFK
LH/SQ 6376 to JFK

and 3 flights a day to EWR
LH 402 from FRA
LH 408 from DUS
LH 410 from MUC

LH cuts its winter timetable by this following flights:

FRA-ATL / -1 weekly / then 6 weekly
FRA-PHL / -2 / 5
FRA-IAH / -2 / 5
FRA-DFW / -2 / 5
FRA-PHX / -4 / 3
MUC-LAX / -4 / 3

One of the remaining 5 daily flights to NYC (=EWR + JFK) will also be cut. Its not decided yet, whether LH will cut it ex DUS, FRA or MUC. LH will only have 4 flights a day to EWR/JFK in winter.

Few weeky ago LH has dropped TXL-IAD and one daily FRA-IAD and one daily FRA-JFK (ops only in summer either). LH has now reduced capacity to North America by 20%.

A total of 8 additional a/c will be taken from the fleet - now altogether 28 a/c. LH didn´t announce further cuts in the european and intra german network. I guess we´ll see some reduction of frequencies there also.

LH will also introduce a charge of 8 US$ for every ticket, beginning 1st of Oct.

The source:

LH press release from today 28/9/2001

Further cuts in capacity - but all destinations in flight schedule still served

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the United States Lufthansa has incurred additional costs, some of which will have to be passed on to passengers.
As a result of the crisis, expenditure - for example, on security measures, insurance premiums and other fixed-cost items - has risen significantly throughout the airline industry. From October 1, until further notice, Lufthansa is therefore compelled to impose a ticket surcharge of eight US dollars per individual flight leg. In taking this action, Lufthansa is following the example set by many other international airlines. Tickets which have already been issued and paid for will not be affected. The surcharge will be shown on each ticket.
As previously announced, Lufthansa is scaling back its flight schedule in the wake of the terror attacks of 11 September. The airline will, however, continue to serve all its destinations worldwide. Only individual flights will be axed.

On the Frankfurt-Atlanta route, one flight pair (of a total of seven) per week will be cancelled. Two of a total of seven flight pairs will be withdrawn on each of the Frankfurt-Dallas, Frankfurt-Houston and Frankfurt-Philadelphia routes. On the Frankfurt-Phoenix and Munich-Los Angeles routes, Lufthansa is withdrawing four of a total of seven weekly flight pairs.

Lufthansa will also suspend a further service between Germany and New York. It has still to be decided whether the flight from Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf will be cut. Lufthansa will still offer four flights a day to New York.

Due to these latest reductions in capacity, Lufthansa will take 28 aircraft out of service. Most of the cuts are on North Atlantic routes and are equivalent to a 20 per cent reduction in seating capacity.

28 airplanes ! oh gosh.
That costs a lot of money I guess.
Too bad for the PHX service. No cuts for the Denver, huh ? Well, hope the situation improves in a couple of months.

I live near and fly from IAD to Europe, mostly on LH. Too bad about the Berlin service ending, but there was no real market for it. But I don't like seeing one of the FRA flights ending (it will probably be the 16:00 departing A340). Egad, I may have to travel on United!

well, Stretch 8, there will still be one daily Lufthansa flight...  Wink/being sarcastic

agree, it´s rather sad to see these changes. however, in the early nineties, in wintertime flights to DFW, IAH, ATL and the third daily to JFK were often downgraded to 5 or 6 weekly services (from daily in summertime).

we have to keep in mind that during winter flights especially between the USA and europe are always downgraded more or less, they see less frequency or smaller aircraft because demand is lower. add to that the recent developments and voilà, massive cuts in the schedules.
i´m pretty convinced that many of the cut services, not only LH´s, will return to normal next summer. perhaps there won´t be such a capacity like this summer, but i do think that many of the cuts are just temporarily until demand picks up again...

i really wonder of which aircraft these 28 aircraft that leave the fleet consist of.
i´m curious if LH now plans the early retirement of all its 747-200, and possibly the A310s?
i hope they´re not gonna sell any A340s, perhaps lease them out...
any thoughts?

If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.

I don't think they will retire the 310's because they are used on high density short haul routes such as FRA-CDG, FRA-LHR and FRA-Berlin amongst others....

my two cents!
