Why Are Delta's Md-80 Series Diff?

Sat Sep 29, 2001 7:39 am

Have you ever noticed how the seating on delts are diff then all the rest? I know the config id 2-3 but on DL the 2 are on the Right side of the plane(when looking from the back) and on other airlines the 2 seats are on the left (when looking from the back). I know delta flies the Md-88 and I don't know of another airline that flies that. Most have 80-86 and I was just wondering if was that or does DL just wanna be different?

I don't know why they have the seats arranged like that, but I do know that Aeromexico also flies the MD-88 and the 2 seats are on the left of the aircraft, so I guess it must have nothing to do with the MD-88 version.

Alaska's MD-82/83 aircraft, like Delta's MD-88s -- and unlike virtually all other airlines operating the MD-80 series -- also are configured with 2 seats on the starboard side (right side when facing forward) and 3 on the port side. Seems like it must be a matter of each airlines' own preference as to whether its M80s are 2-3 or 3-2.

Unlike other carriers, Delta's entire MD-80 series fleet consists of MD-88s. As for your presuposition of "does DL just wanna be different?" I would expound on that deep logic and say that "D" for Delta means they are "D" for different.

Delta's MD90s are configured differently from the MD88s. The MD90 is 2-3 and the MD88 is 3-2.

The MD-88 is also operated by Iberia (whoe took over Aviaco). Remember the unducted fan tests of the late '80's? The MD-88 was the MD-80 version earmarked for possible UDF re-engining.

Incidently, the first few (3 I think) MD-88's delivered to Delta were delivered as MD-82's and upgraded to -88 soon after the -88 was certified.

2-3 or 3-2....doesn't matter to me....still more comfortable than 3-3.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I've read on this forum before that it has to do with the placement of the galley or something like that.

I've heard the same thing about the rear galley. On Delta it can be three seats wide, while on other carriers it can only be two seats wide. Alaska is the same way.

It kinda threw me off the first time I flew on a Delta MD-88. After flying on relatives of the MD-88 (DC-9-32 and B717), and being used to the 2+3 setup that many airlines use in these family of aircraft, seeing the 3+2 setup Delta uses made me initially think that all MD-88 were like this. I was just glad that I had the window seat, and another pax had the aisle, so nobody got stuck with the middle seat.

I flew on an Iberia MD-87 in july, the configuration was
the same as in their MD-88 series.
I haven't flown in any of their older DC-9 so I can't tell if it's company preference?

AeroMexico uses both configurations 2-3 and 3-2 on its MD-80 fleet. Some MD88 are 2-3 like Delta and some MD-83 are also 2-3. Last time I flew MEX-MAM on a MD83 it was configured 2-3. There was a lot of space between the galley and the 2 seat section. Although AeroMexico gets more passengers on the 3-2 configuration of the MD80's, because the galley takes out some valuable seats.

PATM04:

Crossair's MD-83 has the same configurations that Delta's MD-88.
