Do Cargo Jets Face The Same Increased Security?

Sat Sep 29, 2001 2:00 pm

Do cargo jets(FedEx, UPS, others)
face the same increased security?

It seems like all the attention has been
directed at commercial passenger planes.
If I'm not mistaken, a cargo plane usually
carries much more fuel because of the
heavy loads....

Has there ever been hijacking of a
cargo plane?

I can't remember any instances of cargo being hijacked. But after this incident, I thought about cargo flights. Ofcouse more fuel, and no PAX to control. Although I guess the shock factor is not their since it's only mail. But then again a bldg has alot of people in it. I just hope that they are also taking appropriate action to prevent this from happening to their flights.

I know there was an incident where an off-duty pilot on one of the cargo carriers (I believe it was FedEx) attempted to hijack a cargo jet and crash it into some major building. My recollection is sketchy, I'm sure others will fill in the details.

Security is beefed up across the board.

The most famous attempted hijacking of a cargo aircraft, I think, is the attempt by a FedEx F/O who was flying as a non rev on a flight from MEM-SJC. He brought a claw hammer on board and bashed all three of the flight crew in the head. He almost succeeded. The crew would not submit though. They landed the plane, a DC-10, back in MEM. Sadly this idiot blamed racism, not his inferior skills and bad attitude, on his troubles. He is now serving a life term in prison.

There is a book on this, I just can't find it to give the title just now.

The book is called Hijacked, I believe. The flight was FedEx 705, a FedEx DC-10, and I believe it said that the hijacker's intentions were to slam the plane into the FedEx hub at Memphis. So there definitely should be increased security for cargo flights....

To answer the question originally posed, yes. There are new security measures in place for cargo carriers. These are handed down from the FAA and not just our company policies, so iu must assume they are industry wide.

Auburn Calloway was the Fedex pilot/ jumpseater who tried to take over a DC-10 and crash it into the Memphis sort facility. He had been or was about to be fired by Fedex for lying on his pilot application...I believe. We should never forget this assholes name......

I was flying in Europe and noticed much higher security on the cargo side, in Germany, after Sept 11th. This included military armored cars mounted with machine guns running around the ramp, armed police checking fight crews, both at checkpoints and randomly, and physical searches of our bags.....they took away one guys toe nail clippers.
