CO & DC10s.. That's All Folks...

Mon Oct 01, 2001 2:29 pm

CO 63 EWRIAH pulled into gate C46 at around 7:30pm tonight and ended CO's 29 year DC10 love affair. It had been hoped to have a water cannon salute, but it was almost dark by then so it didn't happen. The aircraft (ship 082) will ferry out to MHV on Monday as CO 9976 along with ship 064 as CO9974 and ship 081 from EWR as CO9975 and thats it.

ya know, as much as I always hated to work on DC-10's I actually have to admit that I am going to miss them. No more hearing them scream into the gate. No more hearing that distinctive sound as the engines start up and all whine in unison.....ahhh..the DC-10.....

Ya know, I'm going to miss the sound of those three CF-6s too. I could always tell when there was a -10 around, even when I couldn't see it. The GEs on the 767s just don't sound the same.

I am going to miss CO's DC 10s. They did a great job refurbing them and I have flown all around the world with CO on them.

EWR - HNL,LGW,ORY,SCL,GIG

HNL - SYD,AKL,BNE,CNS,GUM (Standup Bar),DEN,SFO,LAX

GUM - HNL, DPS

AKL - SYD,Papeete

IAH - LAX

CO really exercised the DC10 on the EWR-HNL-SYD-MEL CO15/16. (26 hours from EWR - MEL). Of course, this is going back a few years.

I just ran all 3 ferry flights through the flight tracker. They're all on their way to Mojave as we speak:

As of 10:40 AM CDT...
Ship 082 (from IAH) is north of Yuma, and will land in about 30 minutes.

Ship 064 (also from IAH) is near San Angelo, TX, and will land in a little over 2 hours.

Ship 081 (from EWR) is over northern Arizona, and will land in just under an hour.

Funny how so many people almost cried here when the last DL L1011 left the fleet... And hardly anybody cares for the CO DC-10... Did Delta pay you guys for the L1011 thing??? Big grin

A sad day... I'm a big DC-10 fan myself, and I've flown it several times.

Personally I can't understand why so many like the L1011, I think the DC-10 is much more elegant.

Its looks as if COA is sending some MD-82's to MHV as well. Flights 9971, 9978, 9979, 9973, 9977 all took off over my house within the last thirty minutes. How many MD-82's are they storing/retiring?

Also USA is sending two 73Q's to MHV. Going to busy in the approach tower today...

DOES anyone know who is aboard these flights right now?

I've flown

IAH-HNL-IAH - 2x

IAH-LAX-IAH - 1x

IAH-SFO-IAH - 1x

IAH-EWR-IAH - 2x

I am sad to see these beautiful birds leave to CO fleet, but I welcome the new 764s to IAH.

CO is actually doing 15 ferry flights today to Mojave, flight numbers 9970-9984. Are these all DC10s, or are there other aircraft going to storage also?

The place must be going nuts taking in all these arrivals, and from one carrier too. I wish I was there, but then again I'm glad I'm not, if you all know what I mean. Regards.

anyone have the tail numbers of the MD-80's that are being sent to MHV? I am curious as to how many are actually being sent. I haven't even been able to find otu at work. Some people I talk to have said only a few while others have said all. I Hope it's all of them cause I hate them. I sure am not going to miss working on those! Give me a 737-800 any day!

The 80 is the last of the real classics CAL has. I'll sure miss riding the jumpseat and watching those guys at work.
I taxied past one of the 10's today operating with a ferry flight #. I've never seen a 10 taxi so slow. They pilots sounded a bit sad over the radio. Can't blame them for taking in the last few hours on the 10. For many of the captains and the SO's, this was their last few hours in an airliner at all as many are retiring with the 10.
Actually flown: EMB-120 EMB-145 B717 B737 B757 B767

Was the retirement sped up because of 9/11? I was talking to a pilot from HNL-IAH in August and he said that they were supposed to go in April. I feel so sad for the flight engineers who are over 60 and can't fly anymore. God bless their hearts.

Sad to see them go. I've flown them:

IAH-LGW-IAH
EWR-MAD-EWR
EWR-FCO-EWR
SFO-HNL
HNL-LAX
IAH-LAX-IAH
IAH-EWR-IAH

and, a long time ago:

MEX-IAH-MEX
MEX-EWR-MEX

I guess my flight into EWR in a couple of weeks will be kind of sad: no twin towers and no 10's.

yes the retirements were sped up because the terrorist attacks. The 10's were not supposed to be full retired until next year. When I initially read about the 10's being phased on on Oct 1, it was said it was going to be temporary but being as they were going to be phased out in a few months, that really makes no sense. No MD-80's were supposed to be phased out for quite some time so maybe you will see some of them come back in the future. I haven't heard any details about that.

Godbless,
I guess it's because there are still a good bunch of DC-10s around. Northwest still operates them, plus FedEx has a good number of them in their fleet, as opposed to the L-1011 which only ATA operates now.

Trans Swede,
Agreed  Smile The DC-10 is far more elegant. Although I still like the L-1011 as well, since it's different from the boring twin engine jobs of nowadays...

I must say I never truly liked the DC10. I flew it on UA, AA, and CO and always felt spooked because of the
negative publicity it attracted after a series of crashes
in the mid to late 1970's that culminated in a short-
lived grounding of the fleet. However, I would have to
say Continental's DC10's were the nicest. They had
been renovated in the mid-1990's as an interim measure
until the 777 and 767's arrived and were always clean
and well maintained. It is sad to see them go. They did
look so good in the CO livery and were fun to fly on.

I have only flown the DC10 a few times as follows:

1983: American Airlines, JFK-BDA (Bermuda)
1987: American Airlines, LAX-JFK
1995: United Airlines, ORD-SEA
2000: Continental Airlines, IAH-EWR

All were fine flights.

Stored MD80's At MCO

Tue Oct 02, 2001 11:20 am

There are about 6 MD80's out side the CO Hanger here at MCO, doesn't look like they are going anywhere (this was last week, they had been there for a few days). Unless they are here for maintenance, but why would they send so many at once...? As for the DC-10, it will be missed. I've only flown on 2 (both with NW) and I wasn't too impressed. I feel safer on the L1011, it's like flying in a big tank.

Actually DL Employees had to pay to be on the last L1011 flight to VCV. Over $23,000 was raised for United Way through a bid system to obtain a seat on the historic flight. If you haven't seen the pictures, they're posted at http://www.L1011.homestead.com

H. Simpson,
I stopped by for a bit last Saturday as I was in the area; I was hoping to catch the DC-10 departures to Italy (FCO and MXP). I checked out a lot near CO's hangars in the north area, and they had two DC-10s parked there. However, I talked to a porth authority guy over there and he told me it would be a bad idea to be around with a camera because they had tightened up security quite a bit, so I left  Sad Did you manage to get any pictures/film?

The beautiful lines of the DC-10 and the smart livery of Continental . . . what a beautiful combination!

I last photographed a Continental Airlines DC-10 at Tokyo Narita Airport in early September 2001 . . . knew by then that the end is near, but still can help but feel a sadness for the early retirement of this beauty.

The DC-10s are fast disappearing from Asia's airports, and I hope that remaining examples continue to operate. Three cheers to Minebea Corporation for keeping her beautiful N10MB in the Asian skies.

I actually wasn't INSIDE the airport perimeter, I stayed at IKEA opposite to the EWR. Thoughout my 6 hrs stay at IKEA, I didn't see any DC-10 departures...may be it's not the time for European Departures.

The one I got is N39081.

Funny story here... My friend works on the airport down here in Grenada.. Standing out at the gate.. his coworker told him to move aside as a JMC DC 10 turned arounds since they didnt use push back.. He asked why.. she said stay there and find out.. no sooner she said the aircraft spun round and suited him in a nice coat of dust.. lol..

I really would miss those screamind DC-10's all our old birds and leaving us.. they served us well....

My name says it all. I work at LAX, we have a provisions warehouse for Skywest in the Continental facilities, so i've seen the planes in the past come in to be prepped to be sent to storage, it's a sad thing. I really like flying on them. I've been on both widebody trijets. I too can't understand why the DC-10 is so reviled by some, it's not as advanced as the Tristar but still a great plane and served it's duties well. From a passenger standpoint it's just as nice, big windows, great engine whines. Good stuff. I guess the only one's I'll really get to see anymore are Fed Ex, save for a few NW 10s.

H. Simpson,
How good is that spot at IKEA? I think I took a back road on the other side of the turnpike once, where the seaport is, it wasn't too bad.

As to the DC-10 departures, there were three on Saturday, but I think only one on Sunday, around noon (flight to houston I think, or Honolulu, I don't remember). By Sunday the FCO and MXP flights had already switched to other airplanes  Sad

I'll miss the DC-10s too. CO was the first DC-10 I flew, way back in 1975, LAX-DEN. If you wanted something to eat, you had to pay. I think it was 50 cents for a hot dog. They showed an 20-minute-long edited version of some old B&W movie on the "Golden Marquee Theatre."

Flew on DC-10s (mostly UA) many times. A few flights stand out:

LAX-HNL in Oct. '98 that was the last "old color scheme" UA aircraft I flew.

COS-DEN back in '96 when WestPac was competing with UA. Only time I ever boarded through door 1-L.

AMS-BOS on a NW DC-10 40 in March '93 was my first Transatlantic crossing on a '10.

JFK-MAD-JFK on IB DC-10 30s ("Costa de Azahar" and "Costa de Luz" in March '95. Exiting from the airstairs on a clear, cold morning at MAD and seeing the aircraft up close was great.

I've always loved the DC-10's look, much more so than the L-1011. The DC-10 nose in particular is much bolder-looking to me, and the through-the-tail engine is unique.

So-long CO DC-10s. You'll be missed.
