Swissair Cancels Flights To Brussels

Tue Oct 02, 2001 4:02 pm

Swissair said on Tuesday it had cancelled its flights to Brussels but that all other flights were operating as normal for now.

Asked whether Swissair was afraid its planes might be impounded if it flew to Brussels, a company spokeswoman said: "We don't comment on security measures. We decided not to fly to Brussels today."

-A lot of turbulence in the Qualiflyer group...

Looks like today will probably be the last one for SN. SR doubtless recalls the last time SN's unions blamed it for their woes - and took a SR A321 'hostage'!  Insane  Insane  Insane

HI Patrik. It is easy to explain, Swissair has fear that Sabena staff will besiege any Swissair planes on Brusser airport due the bankruptcy of the old Swissair.

During a strike this year a Swissair aircraft was "captured" by the SN strikers. The aircraft and employees had to wait a long to before they could depart again. Since then Swissair aircraft diverted their flights to MST (Maastricht-Aachen) several times to avoid SN employees taking over their aircraft.

I just saw a Swissair plane above Maastricht and I also heard it at the scanner. So I think Swissair is just flying to MST and not to Brussels.

SR had two of its aircraft impounded at LHR this morning - so the decision not to operate to BRU may well have been to avoid any legal action that would have resulted in the loss of an aircraft!

According to their website, all flight operations have been suspended pending a bank decision. SOunds like more nails being hammered into the coffin. Quelle Domage!

From Swissair webpage:

Swissair flight operations suspended – next decision at 14:00

Zurich-Airport, October 2, 2001 -– Swissair’s flight operations were suspended at 12:30 CET. All aircraft that are currently airborne en route will continue their flights to their destination as scheduled.
Swissair is engaged in intensive negotiations with the banks to ensure the continuation of its flight operations. A final decision is due at 14:00.

Indeed, Swissair cancelled the 7 flights to Brussels today. And indeed they are 'afraid' for the SN-employees; and only because they are starting to know what SR is really doing to SN (breaking contracts,...).

But, who does need to fly to Zürich can count on SN-services. SN flies 3 times today to Zürich instead of SR.
