Mesa CRJs To Replace Some America West Routes

Wed Oct 03, 2001 4:53 pm

Even though America West plans to reduce capacity 20 percent since the attacks, they have NOT eliminated any cities from its network as a result. They are however, postponing the nonstop PHX-RDU service until January 3, 2002. To help make it all possible, effective October, 28, 2001, America West has given over several routes to Mesa (America West Express) to fly CRJs in those light markets.

Examples:
PHX- BOI 3 daily CRJ from 2 daily 73S
PHX-ICT 4 daily CRJ from 2 daily 73S
PHX-TUS 7 of 12 daily flights now on CRJ from 12 daily 73S/733/319/320
PHX-BUR 4 daily CRJ and 1 A319 from 5 daily 73S/733/320
PHX-LGB 4 daily CRJ and 1 A319 from 5 daily 733/319/320
PHX-DFW 1 of 6 daily flights now on CRJ
PHX-DSM 1 daily 733 and 1 daily CRJ from 4 daily CRJ.

America West has had some of the industry's best load factors and operating performances since 9/11. They were also the first airline to resume their full schedule after the shutdown.

September load factor was 59.8 one of the highest in the industry. Octobers bookings are pretty good and Novembers are looking good also. HP was actually the nations largest airline for 1 day on 9/13 had over 200 flights that day.

The routes that have been replaced with rj's must have been the least profitable. Maybe AWA is trying to squeeze some profit out of them using rj's which have a lower cost and will undoubtedly be booked full. When times improve I fully expect to see mainline aircradt back on these routes. It would be neat to see a re-allocation of A/C to CMH for some new routes such as CMH-SEA, CMH-STL, CMH-FLL, CMH-RDU. I think AWA will be returning some older aircraft or those which don't have the most favorable lease terms. At least they haven't dropped service from any destinations. Things will be interesting and I hope the company will announce their strategy for the future in the coming weeks. Fly AWA!

"PHX-DSM 1 daily 733 and 1 daily CRJ from 4 daily CRJ"

This is actually an upgrade from an all Express route to a mainline/express route. DSM has been served by only Mesa for many years, now they are getting a 733.

I'm not so keen on the CRJ replacements (esp. to So. Cal). I've never liked the CRJ which always felt cramped to me. Also, I always preferred flying to LGB over LAX for my business travel... much easier airport to fly in and out of. Now I can't get Continental codeshares from Newark to connect to the remaining 319 flight to LGB. Apparently, CO doesn't codeshare the Mesa flights. Makes a big difference when I'm looking at a double FF mile situation if I fly to LAX.

October 28th they take over BUR. We will still have one early morning 733 or 319.

AWA22, are the 732's going out soon? I was checking LAX-PHX and LAX-LAS for January and didn't see one, those were always 73Q routes.

PHX-SAT is a solid 737-200 mkt since service was initiated. Still shows 73Q after January 1.
