Is United really that good?

Wed Dec 02, 1998 1:12 pm

After reading the favorite airline posts, I saw that most people gave United high marks. I'm glad to hear that, since I'm flying United RIC-ORD-LAX later this month and to Singapore in April. I didn't used to like United, but I had 15,000 miles in their original frequent flier program and I obtained a United Visa card which gave me 10,000 free miles, giving me a free trip. And by flying with them to Singapore from RIC, I'll almost have another free trip. Based on what you people have been saying, United must have improved greatly from several years ago, and I should enjoy my trip. I'll give you a report when I return. My trip is Dec. 25 - 29.

I've been flying on UAL for the last 6 years (I got stuck in their FF program). I have rpobably been on 30-40 flights with them. They seem to be fine. I like their international business class! I have flown on a lot of their aircraft including:

B727-200
B737-200
B737-300
B737-500
B747-100
B747-200
B747-400
B767-300
B777-200

and I have never had a problem except for a delayed flight due to extremly hot temps in the summer in PHX (a B727-200). You should have a fine flight.

My dad has hundreds of thousands of UAL miles, and he flies on about 6 segments with them a month. He has flown all arcross the US and Aisa on them. He has been to as far as Taipei (from North Carolina) on them and he has few or no complaints as far as I know.

While I am biased towards my carrier, I do believe that we have not only the most modern fleet in the skies
but that our on time performance is second to none also.
We carry more business travelers than any other domestic carrier and we were the first to add 777's to our route system. We were deeply involved in the design and production of the 777 also.
UAL has a proud history behind it and we intend on keeping it proud. We are employee owned now and we all take great pride in serving the traveling public.

I was wanting to ask aviator_ua what planes you fly for United and what routes you fly on. United is my favorite American airline and the one I almost exclusively fly on these days. It's really cool to talk to someone who is a United pilot.

Dear aviator_ua,

You say that United Airlines has the most modern fleet in the skies, well, sorry to disappoint you, but nearly all Western European and Asian carriers have a more modern fleet than UA. B727.200 isn't quite top notch, is it, B747.200 is also an ageing lady, isn't it...
For the on time record: Southwest is the US leader in on time departures, followed by Delta,US airways, American, Continental, TWA, Northwest, and then United!! (source: US DOT)
It is good to be proud of your company, but be realistic: United is a good airline, at least for US standards, but they can never tip the European ones...
Oh... The Mach subject: In the cockpit one does not normally work with mach, but in Knots (nautical miles), but off course you know that!

Their meal service in Business Class across the Atlantic gets very high
marks from me. I felt it was better than Lufthansa's and Virgin's offerings.

On the other hand, more than once I have felt that UA flight attendants are
somewhat sour. Not all of them, of course, but on this same flight (FRA -ORD)
with the great food, they just seemed haggard.

United really that good? NO

No, it is an unsafe airline and does not follow FAA rules and CIA and FAA documents support this. I would not fly United if it was the last airline on earth.

I think United is a very good airline. They have good service on board, the meals are good and the flight attendants are friendly. Also United has a nice modern fleet which includes Airbus A319's/A320's, B757, B767, B777, and B747-400. OK the 727, the DC-10 and the 747-200 are old aircrafts, I know that very well, but many airlines still have elderly airplanes. I think United will keep their remaining 727's for another 3 years. I didn't mention the 737 because United doesn't seem to be interested in it anymore (they have a few 200's left that will dissappear very soon, the 300's and 500's will be around longer but they will progressively be withdrawn from the fleet, they'll probalby be there for another decade, I think...). In the future, say the year 2010, the fleet will consist of the following: A319/A320, B757, 767-300 (I don't know if the 200 will still be around), B777 and B747 (400 only). And who knows, maybe they'll get A321's and A330's. Am I right ?

PS. The B767, is that what you fly aviator-ua?

I agree with cv990 about the FAs, and I don't like it that UAL will not have MD aircraft in its fleet in the future, but that seems to be the trend, which I think is sad. Overall, I think UAL is a good airline though.

I don't care much for United, they really don't give that much leg room on their newer planes. I'm 6ft 1 in so I could really use any extra space that I could get!
