Best Non-major Airline

Sat Oct 06, 2001 5:22 am

Hey, this has probably been discussed before but, who cares? What is your favorite non-major airline, not Delta, United, American, Air France, British Airways ect...... and why? (pictures would be nice!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy )

Transavia.
Good service, good aircraft, nice network.
Fought their way up from a startup charter company to a full airline before having KLM take a majority share in them...

Midwest Express would be my pick for best non major airline. They have great service and good food on every flight, however their destinations are limited. Southwest Airlines is also a great non major carrier. Their prices are competitive and they use mostly newer 737-3,4,5,6,7,8.

roswell41...Southwest IS a major airline. They're just low fare, but they board more domestic passengers than any other (I think...Delta may board more).

...and they (Southwest) fly more nonstop, point-to-point routes than -->any<-- airline ever has.

In the USA: My username says it all!  Big grin

In Asia: China Southwest has really incredible service (great meals, new a/c, fun crew), and JAS (Japan Air Service) is awesome--they even have English newspapers on tiny little commuter flights!

In Europe: I'm a big fan of easyJet--it's a lot like a European version of Southwest, with really good fares and a lighthearted attitude.

In my opinion,
COPA Airlines
With only a fleet of 737s it covers 2 continents and the Caribbean.

My vote would be for Hawaiian Airlines.

12th largest airline in the US, 13 717s, soon to be 16 767s (with delays due to the economy) One of the few large airlines still flying the DC-10. Unique, far reaching destinations (LAS in the East to Tahiti in the South to Alaska in the North).

Excellent food, great service, one of the lowest FFP award (5000 miles for a one way trip) of any airline, ontime, low fares (5000 miles or $73.00...hmmmm).

May not be 2 abreast seating in coach..but we can't be everything to everyone.

Gotta love da hawaiian spirit.

It's gotta be National Airlines. They have great food, low prices, and excellent crew members. If your going to vegas anytime soon, I would highly recommend them.

I too cast my ballot for Midwest Express. First class service throughout at fares that are usually comparable to, sometimes less than, coach on the "full-service" majors.

What do you mean by non-major?

Evidently, worldwide, all airlines with say 100+ fleet are major, right? Even 50+?

Can we then conclude that non-major means something like not the flag carrier / dominator in the market?

So, what about really small flag carriers? Like Estonian Air or LAB? Are those non-major even though they are major in their specific (national) market areas?

My experience is more limited than I'd like, but based on that, I'll pick British Midland. This from a four-year old experience (I doubt they've deteriorated during these years - being accepted to Star and all  Big grin). They're a prime example of how to fight the lazy big guy. In Europe, I'd also love to try Air Botnia, Crossair and Lauda Air.

I definitely believe LanChile could be one of them:

-They have a fleet of near 50 aircraft.
-Great network, from Punta Arenas in the
south to New York in the north (with an
astonishing amount of flights to and
from Miami) and from Papeete in the
west to Frankfurt in the east.
-Great service(really one of the bests of
the world), the safest in Latin America
and an extremely beautiful livery
-Also member of OneWorld

Its fleet consists of:

National comes in second to me. I really enjoyed their first class service, but they do not serve MCI, so I cannot fly them very often.

Excel Airways, the UK's newest and most punctual charter airline with the most modern charter fleet.
Leather seats, good food with a choice of menu, enthusiastic and genuinely friendly crews.

But then of course I'm biased  Big thumbs up

Have a look at the website http://www.excelairways.com
