Lauda Air To Discontinue VIE-MUC-MIA

Sun Oct 07, 2001 2:39 am

According to Austrian Airlines News, the 5 weekly Vienna-Munich-Miami flight will be discontinued after the 28th October. (OS now cancelles ORD, YYZ and MIA)
I hope Lufthansa will overtake MUC-MIA because 80% of the passengers on this flight are Germans.

Thats the 4th intercontinental flight which will be discontnued from Munich because of the attacks.

Sad news for Munich...but as you said, the chance that LH will take over this route from the beginning of the next summer timetable are not too bad. But for this winter you have to live without MIA.

It is NOT a discontinuation, and neither are Toronto and Chicago. It is a suspension for the winter schedule as Austrian expects a lightened demand during this winter season. Lauda, for example, will keep thier US HQ, in Miami, open. Service should resume in April, Miami might resume as early as Feburary according to Miami Today News. The suspension of the flight is a surprise, because loads were very good and the premium seats were actually an easy sell. If Austrian, however, decides to make this a permanent change, you can bet Lufthansa, which used to fly the route twice a week with a 742, and did start codesharing on this flight a while ago (and made a big deal about it), will look in to flying this route (thrice weekly A340; daily during winter would work). Despite a downturn in trans-Atlantic travel, experts in Miami expect it won't hurt Miami as much as other cities (though our tourism will still hurt, but mainly on the domestic side). Miami is, I believe, the second (or third) most popular US destination for Germans. Look for an announcement in Jan/Feb on when/if Miami, Chicago, and Toronto will (or will not) resume.

I´ve got some info from OS FA/s that the US flights are suspended only and not cancelled. After a market research during the next months they will make further decissions. Originally it was planned to cut down frequencies to Chicago and Toronto in winter because of the unsatisfying load factor during this time of the year. Chicago had a "saisonal load factor problem" from the beginning. This with the Miami flight was somehow an interesting decission....

Im not sure about a return of the MIA flights. The Problem is the VIE-MUC sector which is very unprofitable for the AUA-Group. In the last month there was only a Fokker 70 or a B737 between MUC and VIE on NG 31/32, the 767 turnd alround in Munich. I think AUA will concentrate their flight-network to Vienna as they are an Austrian Airline. Maybe they will fly Vienna-Miami nonstop.

Flumuc, we'll see, though if Lauda does not come back (they have said they likely will), I have no doubt that LH will add MIA to thier long-haul MUC schedule. Way too much demand between the two.

Just took LAUDA AIR between VIE and BKK today. Crew said that the B777 used will be deployed for daily VIE-KUL-AUSTRALIA services in the winter. As NG only has 2 B777s, this will fill the schedules up. They also do a VIE-BKK-DPS run once a week.

NG's flight to Australia via KUL is currently only 5 flights per week. However, in January, it will be increased to 6 flights weekly. As far as I know, there's no news regarding NG adding another flight to Australia making it a daily flight, but correct me if I am wrong.

Since summer, NG only used the B763 on the MIA run, obviously to free up the B777 for their Asian-Australian-services.

I don´t see NG (res. OS) serving the VIE-MIA market nonstop soon. With not more than 30-60 pax on board ex VIE bound for MIA via MUC, there aren´t enough passengers to support a nonstop service from VIE.

On the other hand, the MUC-MIA route is a very popular one. Seeing the fact, that this cut (VIE-MUC-MIA) is only a temporary suspension, i´m convinced, that NG will pick up the route again as soon as possible or perhaps OS itself steps in with their own a/c, who knows.

If this suspension turns into a permanent cut, LH would look to fly this route itself for sure. Perhaps we can´t expect a LH service starting the next year, but after one or two years, there should be enough demand for a daily A343 service. Don´t forget, LH didn´t increase capacity between FRA and MIA for quite a long time now. So a second daily MIA service ex Germany might already be on their list.

But i still see the NG 763 as the ideal a/c to operate the MUC-MIA route.

By the way, the DL (JFK suspended, while ATL still served) and AC (YYZ suspended) cuts are only temporary at the moment. Both airlines should be back in MUC for the next summer season. The only routes, which have been discontinued definitly, are the trice weekly Malaysian to KUL and the twice weekly Air Namibia to WDH. It´s disappointing, but the situation is not that worse (only 5 weekly flights lost so far) in my opinion, as LH and the Star Alliance carriers will stick to Munich (latest proof: surprising increase in flights to Asia, PVG and HKG, this winter), there´s no doubt about it.

D-FAIB is correct. VIE-MIA would probably not work non-stop. Most of the passengers came from Munich, and the Lufthansa codeshare helped a lot. The flight has always been popular, and remember, when they ended 772 service on the route, they added a fifth-weekly flight. Now, making some rough estimates here, but estimate the 772 seats 270 and the 763 seats 220, that is actually increased number of seats. Austrian also has used thier own A340 on the flight during the "highest" of the high season (around February). I fully expect Miami, as well as O'Hare and Toronto, to be back on Austrian's trans-Atlantic destination list by the summer. Though if Miami does not return, Lufthansa would have no problem even filling up a daily 742 during the winter. Plus, Miami is one of six Star Alliance hubs in the US.

I was just typing around in the Austrian Airlines online Timetable and there are some strange things going on.
They had Chicago in the schedule for next spring. But it had the flightnumber OS 3084 and operated with a Boeing 767-300 .... There were no classes available yet.
That was a flight in mid of April.
