Are Sabena Pilots On Strike?

Mon Oct 08, 2001 3:48 am

I please need your help!
I am planning a trip for next week end and the cheapest fare I can find is with SABENA.
Yet I have heard many rumours about strikes with them, what I can't understand is:
Are the pilots already on strike?
HAve they been?
Are they planning to?

The only info I found on Sabena website is a not so reassuring mention of "apologies" for any inconvenience the strike can cause, but...will they be on strike next weekend?!?!
Thanks a lot!!

I would not fly Sabena at the moment if I was you. Paying a little extra can be worth it if you are guaranteed to reach your destination without encountering cancelled flights.

Don't fly them. The cheap ticket becomes very expensive when (not if) another strike or bankruptcy occurs, and faced with a useless ticket you have to buy a second ticket on another carrier to get home.

Avoid Swissair also.

I'd add my support to that. Added to which, the service is (usually) abysmal - and all the more so with the current strain the cabin crew are under.

I agree with your replies. Yet I was sort of hoping that financial problems were not having a disruptive effect in the next week...
Assiming they have the cash to fly the planes, do you please know if flights are delayed/cancelled for other reasons at the moment (such as strikes) or if there are plans for?

Sabena is operating on borrowed time at the moment - the emergency government cash infusion they are living off at the moment will only last for so long, and it might even be declared unlawful by the EU courst on monday. Don't take the chance...

PA121, Sabena-pilots are not on strike and as Sabena is working on his newest business-plan in the next few weeks you are safe that Sabena will not be on strike.

SN-A330, I would welcome a ride on Ceilidh L1011s, I love that plane!
Similarily, I will give Sabena a chance. I have put my reservation (from the web) on hold for 24 hours and unless anything terrible happens to them tomorrow, I will confirm it and take the chance of loosing my 124GBP.

I will post a report if everything goes well. I wish Sabena management could read this post and avoid bankruptcy for the next 7 days....  Smile

Great PA121 that you give Sabena a chance. Sabena is a wonderful airline. And yes, I like the L1011 too, but we'll never fly Ceilidh's planes, that's for sure.

Maybe if he makes his model-planes remote-controlled ?

Sorry to disappoint you chaps but I'm afraid that the L1011 project was another victim of the 11th September - having spent nearly two years on it and over US$500,000 it's been shelved indefinitely.

I am, however, working on something else at present which if it works out will be launched soon.

I'm flying Sabena tomorrow and Thursday.
No worries so far. Unions will be meeting our prime minister today to check what he ahs been up to (rumours about Virgin Express taking over some pieces and interest of AA). Howver the unions did say, if nothing sensible comes out of the discussions (which I doubt since nothing sensible has ever come out of our prime minister) they will plan actions. Actions, was not defined...
I'm curious for tomorrow though. Wonder what the atmosphere will be like and what the occupancy rate will be. In the past the Geneva flights (which is the flight I'll be taking), were completely full. Wonder what it'll be tomorrow...

I was flying Sabena through one of their striking periods. I had to carry my luggage from the aircraft to the terminal and there was no meal service on board. Yet both flights operated on time. Under the circumstances, I think they did a good job. They did their best with whatever resources they had.

Bicoastal, what you say in your post about emotions getting in the way of pilots ability to fly is totally wrong and it's a shame to say something like that about these professionals, being Sabena pilots or others.

Airbuspilot, you and SN-A330 should not be allowed in the air as you are an obvious danger to yourselves and others - if what you posted is indeed what you believe. Are you trying to say that pilots are super-human? If so, you shouldn't be one, because they are not. They suffer from depression, stress, substance abuse etc etc as much as the rest of the population and to try and brush it under the carpet and pretend it doesn't exist is likely to cost people their lives.

That was without doubt one of the stupidest posts I've ever seen.  Pissed  Pissed  Pissed

It looks like bicoastals post was deleted. Sorry, but the pilots are not emotionally distressed to the point of not being able to fly. When my husband puts on his uniform he goes to another place. He becomes 110% into his job regardless of what is going on around him. Be careful what you say, otherwise all pilots (for every airline) will have to take a psychological exam before stepping into the aircraft before Every flight!
and ceilidh, are you a bored housewife or were you rejected by a Sabena flight attendant? Your total hatred of Sabena taints all your posts. I see you have sooo much time to post on this website and pprune. Too much time on your hands to be able to start up a company I think.

My comments were in reaction to a post from "Groholsky" whose profile says he or she is a Sabena first officer. That post was deleted along with mine, which is fair. But, I stand by my words.
