Why Doesn't SQ Like GE?

Why don't they? They have a big fleet of B744s and A313s with Pratts and B777s with Rolls. Is there something wrong with GE?

I wouldn't say SQ don't like GE... maybe it's just preference to go with PW or RR. There's nothing wrong with GE too, there are thousands of GE engines operating round the world.

It is not that the airline had not operated GEs . . . the DC-10-30s and the A300B4s were powered by GE engines.

They probably just wanted to avoid a situation where they have engines from every single engine manufacturer and end up carrying a lot of spares. That would be a very costly exercise, one that would negate any performance advantage that GE engines may have over P&W or RR.

Prior to their committment to the RR engines for the B777s, you could say that "SQ does not like RR".

Engine choices can be based on numerous things: price, fleet compatibility, manufacturer satisfaction, etc.

SIA's 742's and 743's were all PW....so when they added the 744, they stayed with PW. Makes sense. Their A310's also PW. So really this is more of a long standing preference for PW (and now RR) than dislike of GE. Had their A300B4 & D10 fleet been larger, GE could have established more of a GE preference which could have helped favour a GE 777 or 744 order. It didn't happen.

Incidently, JAL has always been very pro-PW. They operate the PW 742, 743, DC-10-40, MD-11. However, when they added the 744 they switched to GE because they were not happy with PW support. So switches can happen. BA started with GE 777's and now only order RR 777's....hence a mixed fleet.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

They think that the GE90's look too big on triple 7's . Therefore it is just a aesthetics issue. It also created confusion in passengers' minds that SQ Jubilee's were electric-powered.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Finally having an RR in your garage sounds appealing, doesn't it ?
