Midway Airport Changes

Tue Oct 09, 2001 1:04 pm

Midway's new terminal is scheduled to open in March 2002. With that happening, what else is going to happen at MDW? What new carriers might introduce service there? What carriers might leave? And how is AA's MDW-DFW service doing? If it's going good, could we see UAL start service of their own from say MDW-DIA? Possibly a chance to hurt Frontier? Let me know what your thoughts are!

Highliner2,

UAL has no business in MDW. DEN (not DIA) is UA's 2nd main hub. ORD is UA's main hub. Therefore it makes sense to focus on DEN-ORD service only.

I hate to disappoint you, but if UAL starts service to MDW from DEN, most likely Frontier will be hurting it.

Already here in Denver, Frontier is causing United to bleed a bit.

Perhaps all the more reason for UA to do it, retake some of that market share. Please be advised I have nothing against Frontier. I was very pleased with their service although I wish they were keeping their 737s.

A DEN-MDW route should be considered by UA as a natural build-up of the DEN hub. Similar to the CO EWR-HOU route (in addition to EWR-IAH) and the AA DAL-AUS route (which has now been discontinued).

A DEN-MDW route by UA would not necessarily take traffic from DEN-ORD.....those travellers to from South Chicago might simply fly whoever flies to MDW.....a potential market UA might be missing at ORD.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Exactly, my home is on the south side of the city. I would be much more inclined to take UA out of MDW than take an hour trip to ORD. In fact, a major reason I took Frontier was its proximity. If UA had been serving the route, I would've paid a little more and taken UA. Northwest, American, Continental, and Delta all serve MDW to their major hubs. Why not UAL?

America West just discontinued service to MDW from its CMH mini hub and sent most of its MDW employees to ORD. Finally after years of dealing with CO at ORD now we finally have HP employees.

I almost forgot, Metrojet is gone, so that's one absentee at MDW. A shame.

Or how about when UA tried to get LAX-DCA, but lost to TW. If we follow BA's rediculous thinking neither UA or AA would have sought the much valued route.

yikes,

Possible newcomers....

JetBlue? They'd probably serve ORD

USAIRWAYS? Maybe with RJs to fill the void left by Metrojet.

The thing is, MDW is no longer a safe haven from the intense competition at ORD! Southwest and ATA have built substantial operations at MDW. And with Northwest, Continental, Delta, and American all being represented there, this airport is pretty crowded. Hopefully when the new terminal is done there will be some excellent places to watch from! There is certainly enough variety!

What can be expected at MDW once the new terminal opens up:

New destinations for SWA and ATA.

Rumors flying around (no pun intended):

Mexicana service to Mexico
United service (cities unknown at the moment)
jetBlue service

America West and USAir recently pulled out. Actually, most HP employess WEREN'T relocated to the re-opened ORD station. Only a handful of CSR's made it (about 10-15) while the rampers and remaining CSR's and sup's are jobless. I know this because I used to work there and have family that used to work there. Bummer.

ATA needs a pair of daily flights on 738s to SAN.

Yeah, I meant to say the "completion" of the new terminal.

Actually I think SAN is in the works for ATA but probably later next year.
