QF's B744s

Why did they buy GE powered ones from Asiana? Do they have a maintanance headache?

They bought 1 GE engined 744 from Asiana and 2 from Malaysian. They were destined for those airlines but due to the economic downturn in 1997, these birds were delivered new to QF from Boeing. They bought them because they were very cheap.

No, these birds are extremely reliable according to my friend, who was a QF mechanic. Having different engines means nothing, because they use the same engines as QF's B767-338ER's, the GE CF6.

The 3 747-400's purchased by Qantas from Asiana & Malaysian, were not delivered directly from Boeing, and actually had been in operation with the previous owners for quite some time.


747-48E Asiana HL 7416 now Qantas VH-OEB was delivered to Asiana on the 10th June 1991

747-4H6 Malaysia 9M-MHN now Qantas VH-OEC was delivered to Malaysia on the 24th June 1993

747-4H6 Malaysia 9M-MHO now Qantas VH-OED was delivered to Malaysia on the 9th September 1990

The 1 thing in common they all have is that they are powerd by the same engine type.

When Qantas first received these aircraft they caused many a problem, especially the interior being completely different to other Qantas 747-400's. This problem of course has now been dealt with, and only the kin eye of an Aircraft Enthusiast could tell the difference from the outside.

I noticed that QF specified GE on their latest order for 6 744's from Boeing.

Why did they switch from RR? Did the 3 used GE 744's that they bought recently impress them?


I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

The GE aircraft are different in quite a few ways (although more similar to the B747-438s than VH-NLH!) .
Generally the 'three ugly sisters' have fewer installed options that the -438, although the last three -438s delivered from Boeing have the same weights etc. (VH-OJS, T & U).
In operational terms the N1 power setting vs. EPR is the most notable difference, and the fact that the CF6 starts in about a fifth of the time of a RB211.
I actually really like the sisters, and look forward to seeing the B747-438LRs with the CF6-80C2s installed.

Does anyone confirm Qantas at one time used 'Pacific' 747-400s on SYD-SIN-CDG to cope with the important business traffic? Or what it for fleet availability reasons?

The three ugly sisters is an affectionate name for the three GE -400s.
I have taken VH-OEC into CDG and VH-OJJ out, both Pacific configured aircraft. It can depend on availability or maintenance hours requirements as to where an aircraft goes. Incidently the second business class cabin was given to economy passengers!
