What Meals Have You Been Served On Your Flights?

Wed Oct 10, 2001 11:47 am

I'm curious. What meals are you usually served on your flights?

When I mean meals, I don't mean snack mixes, and snack packs. I mean full hot meals.

I'm usually almost ALWAYS served with pasta.

For me, its usually always pasta. Anywhere from tortellini to fettuccine.

I've pretty much had every type of Italian pasta on my flights. Big grin

In the past, I would get more of a variety. Each flight would be different.

I've had chicken all the way to duck! I was quite surprised that I was served duck on my flight.

I don't remember the flight. I think it was on BA 3 years ago from DEN to LGW. But it also might have been KLM 4 years ago from ORD to AMS. I don't remember.

Anyways, nowadays its usually always pasta. 5 years ago on United, I was served pizza.

In my experience, KLM has had the best food followed by BA. United's food is also very good.

Anyways what have your food experiences on your flights been?

Hmm...let me see......
The last flight i took was CX Y class to Sydney last month. No PASTA was served hehe.I was served with Prawns rice while flying to Sydney and was served Wonton Noodles for Breakfast (Actually the flight was delayed for 2 hours so CX staff gave us 3 A$15 coupon and so i was quite full actually) and Spicy Chicken for lunch. But i remember except CX flight to Sydney on Y, i guess it would be nearly 3 years ago that i've travelled on Y, so icouldn't really remember what i ate.

But that's just an exception, because if you travel on First Class, that'd be a very very different story!!Try SQ's first class, i've only flown on SQ's F so can't compare with other airlines but i remember my meal - Caviar or Seafood Platter (Sometimes different, but Caviar must be in the list) for the 1st menu. Then you soup will be served, of course you can skip it, followed by Salad with different dressings. Then there will be 5 main courses you can choose from, and one of them was a recommendation from SIA Chef, and i usually choose that one.Oh yeah i remember once they offered Sorbet before taking the main course, to sorta CLEAN your mouth. And finally, they'd offer you Fresh Fruit Selections and Cheese with Biscuits, and ice-cream or a cake as the desert with a beverage to end it.

But there's one main point for Y food and F food...it's just not enough!Because actuall, i think both Y and F food are just delicious! You really can't compare them with restaurants on the ground, but still i can accept the taste and flavour!

Maybe the truth is...how much you pay, how much you get.

Best Regards

I'll share a few highlights

on my return trip from SJU-Houston this past June, they served some sort of breaded spanish chicken dish with a weird gravyish sauce, it wasn't really good, but the other option was Sea Bass.

on a CityBird flight from EWR-BRU I'm not really sure what the meat under the gravy was. I think it could have been rabbitt. I was so hungry I was ready to eat anything and I didn't even question it.

Also, I bought a very cheap web fare on Delta last summer from JFK-PDX. I was seated in the very last row of economy of a full flight, by the time the FA's reached us with breakfast of pre packaged bagel and cream cheese they were all out, so myself and the person next to me got First Class meals instead, scrambled eggs and fresh warm bagels. What a treat!

Rabbit? Wow. I've heard it tastes like chicken! Big grin

I tried duck 2 or 3 years ago, and it was decent. It tastes a lot like chicken except its a lot tougher, and much fattier.

I'd rather have chicken since its much less fattier and greasy.

Usually steak or chicken is served to Australia. To New Zealand I had lamb. To Japan from the united states, Sushi. To Hong Kong, I have had Singapore styled noodle breakfasts, as well as chicken. Hong Kong-Tokyo, Cathay has always served me sea food noodle meals. very good!
Last time I had pasta, hell I think was in maybe 1994 or so from denver stapelton to Chicago o'hare on a UAL DC-10. for some reason that one always sticks out in my mind as far as pasta goes! I never really travel much long domestic segements to have meals in the United states. Usually PHX-LAX/SFO or PHX-ORD to connect to the Asia Pacific region. the ORD flight is usually a mid night departure so just a snack is served.

Cheers!

Travelling back to Heathrow from Narita on BA last year in first (got an upgrade from Club), I had been away for a while and got talking to the steward - I told him I was really missing simple english food (i.e. Pies and Pasties) and he went off and came back with two Cornish Pasties !!

Turns out they were for the cabin crew and they had happily swapped them for my 1st class meal.

Best meal I have ever had on an aircraft !!!

Most of the Qantas flights I have been on - mainly SYD-MEL or SYD-BNE (around an hour each) have been some sort of meat and rice dish - had Mongolian Lamb and Rice last week from BNE to SYD, was quite nice too, my colleague was not hungry so I tucked in to his.  Smile

Beef Stroganoff

Stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu

Deli Sandwich with Turkey, Ham, and cheese

scrambled eggs with pancakes and sausage

Apple pancakes with sausage, some hashbrown thingy

coach has been:

American Bistro Breakfast (cereal, fruit, raisins)

Roast beef (looked like stew) on AA

cereal with yogurt, granola, some fruit

eggs with ham and cheese on top of a piece of bagel

On SQ, in Y there's always a choice of Asian dishes usually consisted of beef or chicken with rice, sometimes steamed, sometimes fried. The other choice usually is a Western dish, served with potatoes.

Also SQ always serves a type of Indonesian dish for flights out of Amsterdam in J class and sometimes in Y. Maybe this is due to the abundance Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam.

Normally a meal that, if it is meat, the animal has taken its last breath months ago. The poor thing was then injected with God knows how many types of preservatives, frozen and exported. The remains were then cooked in lots of high cholesterol oils and artificial additives to give it some sort of semblance in taste to what the airline is making you beleive you are eating, and put in a foil casserole with vegetables. Then frozen again for a few more days (or probably even weeks). When the time comes, it is then transported to the plane where it is heated at very high temperatures in a very short period of time. Before being put on a tray and served, the meal may have even been dropped (it's contents spilled if you are extremely unlucky) then served to the expectant passenger who eats it heartily and tells the crew to compiment the chef !
My honest opinion.

This thread has gotten unnecessarily cynical.

The best meal I ever had was on Continetal Business First, EWR-LGW. It was a steak, cooked perfectly medium, with a portabella mushroom sauce. It was some good stuff.

Worst meal ever: TWA, PHX-STL. It was turkey sandwich, and it was still frozen!!! Bravo, TWA . . .

In regards to the last post and the frozed turkey sandwich.
I've been served that same meal several times. Although not quite frozen, it's the Ice cold luncheon meat on a hard flavorless role. Why do they bother?

That gets my award as the worst consistent airline meal going, and it's not just TWA, seems like alot of carriers offer this one up.

About a year ago, I flew US Airways SFO - PHL, and they served a chicken breast in a mango barbecue sauce that was most excellent. This was one of their better transcon first class lunches.

The ultimate food (I've never flown SQ) that I've seen is on US Airways' Envoy class to Europe. It's a menu prepared by the chef at one of the best restraunts in Philadelphia.

On Midwest Express, the Best Care in the Air, I have been served turkey and dressing, brussel sprouts, dinner roll, salad, and chocolate cheesecake for dinner, a baked chicken breast with green beans, rice, dinner roll, salad, and cake for dinner, fruit platter with cereal and mini muffins for breakfast, and jumbo shrimp cocktail and a turkey club sandwich and cookies for lunch. All of this included either red or white wine or champagne.
