F-15 Over The Hudson River 9 October

Wed Oct 10, 2001 12:03 pm

Around 1250 EDT on 9 October I was on 12th Avenue in Manhattan when I heard a jet that was fifty times louder than the usual LGA-bound airliners cruising up the Hudson at 4000 ft. I didn't see the F-15 until it was pulling into a vertical climb away from me, with obvious orange in the jetpipes (I guess that means afterburner, right?), but I'm guessing he started from 1500 ft or so. Got the attention of a megapeople or two. NY Approach must have arranged (or waited for) a gap in the LGA arrivals. Anybody know what the occasion was?

I'm assuming it's part of the regular air patrols over New York these days.

Does anyone know how far out these planes go? I live in Western CT and I've been hearing louder jets than usual lately very early in the morning and also in the afternoon.

much louder than what I usually hear at the municipal airport near me.

Most likely they were part of the 102th Fighter Wing, flying out of Otis in Massachusetts, so probably they are covering most of lower NY/CT/MA.

The mystery is that he wasn't patrolling-- he was putting on a show. No objections here, but I assume a patrolling aircraft has no reason to drop down below the LGA arrival route.

All major metro areas now have permanent US fighter protection.

In fact , for the first time ever, NATO (not US) E-3 Sentrys have been dispatched to the United States for continental protection duties.

Let's face it kids, if even just one tenth of the Muslims on Earth want to see harm come to us, that's 100 MILLION people. And now they know an effective and simple to use weapon of mass destruction is a jetliner.

Want my opinion? One will have to be shot down be New Years.

You know what I just spent 10 minutes typing out the scenario I think is most likely, and then erased it all. I'm not posting it here. One less idea to clue in whatever evil scumbag might be lurking about.
