Who Flies The IL-96?

Wed Oct 10, 2001 4:58 pm

Self explanitory, who flies the Ilyushin-96? I know Aeroflot does, but who else? Where do those airlines fly them to? It doesn't seem to be very different than the A340, and now they offer it with P&W engines, what makes Airbus' any better (besides cockpit comonality).

Besides Aeroflot, Domodedovo Airlines / Domodedovskiye Avialinii fly them, for instance to Faro (see the database)
And of course the Russian Government, Vladimir Putin's presidential aircraft.

The current operators are Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Domodedovo Airlines, Atlant-Soyuz and Rossiya (the Russian government).

Aeroflot flies the Il-96 to selected destinations in south-east Asia like Singapore and Bangkok, Cuba, India and seasonally to London/Frankfurt etc. There are many other destinations but I can't think of them all at the moment.

Domodedovo flies them from Moscow DME to the Russian far east on their normal route network but only regularly to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, on charters to southern Europe and occasionally to other places all over the world. Try looking at if you can read Russian.

Atlant Soyuz only uses the Il-96 for cargo so that could mean anywhere.

Rossiya goes anywhere Mr Putin does.

The A340 has the same configuration and fills a similar role, but the Il-96 is in no way a copy of the Airbus. I can clarify this point later if needed.

What makes Airbuses better? Technically nohting, but about 50 years of western propaganda to make us think that products from 'over there' are somehow inferior. Airbus has better marketing and political muscle behind it.

Both the A340 and Il-96 are very high-tech aircraft.

Privet Ben

All you would have to mention to show that the Il-96 isn't a copy of the A340, is the simple fact that the Il-96 flew pretty much even b4 the A340 was on the drawing boards.  Smile

You mentioned the E3 Il-96-300s. In addition to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, they also fly the IL-96 to Петропавловск-Камчатский (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii), although this is on a basis of the Il-62 sometimes being operated in place of the Il-96.

Below are some photos of the E3 Il-96-300 from the airline's website

The IL96M (OK, not the -300 version you´re talking about here, but still an IL96) is in fact much more similar to Boeing than to Airbus: the IL96M and the 767 are 40% identical and the IL96M has cockpit commonality with the 747-400. So this plane would really perfectly fit into a Boeing fleet.
