Qatar Airways Gets First A320

Thu Oct 11, 2001 12:52 am

Qatar Airways has taken delivery of its first A320 from Airbus, with the remaining five to be delivered in the next few years.

To be used on regional routes from its Doha base, the new aircraft - and those still to come - will progressively complement the airline's leased A320s.

The carrier expects the delivery of the remaining five A330-200s to begin next year, and the two A380s from 2007.

The Qatar-based airline has also placed an order for an Airbus corporate jetliner, making it the first airline customer for the jet.

Currently, the airline uses the A320s for its Middle East services, and flies A300-600s on its European and Asian sectors.

The A320 was handed over to Akbar Al Baker, chief executive, by Gustav Humber, Airbus chief operating officer, in Toulouse, France.

"Air travel is a fundamental need of trade and tourism and, despite recent events, we are confident of growing our business by providing it with more aircraft such as the A320 that we have received," said Al Baker.

"Passengers can look forward to the quality of our service, and with a young all Airbus fleet they can be sure of travelling in both comfort and style."

Do you think they are going the GF way...of acquiring A320 for intra-gulf routes ?
