President Bush meeting this morning with a NATO official says that NATO "AWACS" aircraft will soon be flying, keeping watch over the United States.

Will these be the 707-300 type shown above, as I assume this is the only type NATO has and where are these planes normally based at?

Thanks, Jeff

Doesn't USAF also have one (or more) 767 in AWACS configuration? I seem to recall seeing something like that...

I don't think so. I'm more familiar with Civil Aircraft but pretty sure all "AWACS" jets in the United States are the 707 type.

I think that you refer to the NATO AWACS planes normally stationed in Europe. They are some of the last built 707-300 type planes with P&W PT3D engines, I think it's TF-30 in military designation.

For some reason they carry a civil registration in Luxembourg which has no air force. Don't know why. But at least that way it was avoided to fight over which air force they should belong to.

Crews are mixed from all NATO countries.

Don't know either where they are normally based, they probably never saw Luxembourg.

I heard that some of them will be on duty in the US while many USAF AWACS planes are at war.

Here is a link to Boeing's 767 AWACS product page:

From reading the text it seems like Japan is the only customer so far. Looks like a neat aircraft, though.

USAF has no 767 AWACS.. They do, however, operate for Japan.
