Saudi men mistakenly open Chicago plane exit window
CHICAGO, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Three Saudi men removed from a United Airlines (NYSE:UAL - news) flight after they mistakenly tried to open an exit window to get air circulating during the boarding process were only confused passengers, the FBI said on Wednesday.
"They didn't understand English, didn't read English. They were trying to get some air circulating in the airplane,'' FBI spokeswoman Virginia Wright said of Tuesday night's incident.
The three were questioned by the FBI and police and later released, she said.
Two brothers were escorting their ill father to St. Louis for a liver transplant and had just boarded United Flight 729, a Boeing 727, at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport when one of the brothers attempted to open an exit window over a wing.
"The incident was a result of the inability of the flight crew to communicate with the passengers. They were Saudi Arabians who spoke no English,'' Wright said. "They were not experienced flyers. They were novice about airplane travel.''
*They are from Saudia Arabia.
*Their father needs a liver transplant.
*They put together their life's savings to pay for an operation in America and transportation to get there (not everyone in Saudia Arabia is a mega-rich oil tycoon mind you).
*They had never been on an airplane before, and now on this - their second flight - the first being the trip from Saudi to Chicago - their father starts to feel a bit sickely and they want to give him some fresh air.
*They decide to open what they think is a window.
Yes execute them I say, it's obvious this would have been another WTC.
Yea i'm sure they live in a cave like Bin Laden. Everyone in the entire world knows of the events that have happened recently. Anyone who is dumb enough to try to open an emergency exit for air shouldn't be allowed the privilege of flying.
why were they even sitting in the emergency exit isle? If the plane were to crash, would you want inexpirienced flyers with bad livers in charge of the lives of many people trying to get out of an over wing exit in a burning plane!!!!!
If they can't speak english, the FA's can't tell them what to do in case of emergency. therefore they shouldn't be sitting in an emergency isle. If they want more leg room, fly first class!
Why the hell can't the airlines use the airconditioning! Almost every flight i am on these days it is too hot! Cool down the airplane, cool down the pax, and everyone will be cool.
Its the biggest piece of shit I ever had to read here.
Why the hell you shout at this highly innocent men! Its absolutely bullshit, but thats how americans sometimes are... its not all about WTC and stuff. They opend a friggin exit window and now what? They explained it and all ok.
What would you do when u are in Arabia and would accidently violate one of their rules. E.g. talkint to women in a certain way.
Holly shit people, are you all damn mad or what? Get a life and dont always post that much rubbsih here...
This is not an uncommon occurrance, even among much more experienced travellers - an Italian guy opened his window exit on a 727 during pushback at LGA a while back, so he could wave to his family in the terminal.
Some of you guys with your opinions posted above need to get it together in a big way.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz
hhhmmmmmmm Ben88 , let's see, Ben=Bin and 88 in muslim is....... yes! Laden.
We gotcha Ben88/Bin you were hiding here all the time...
So you definitely deserve the "privilege of flying" so... go jump... leave the parachute at home....
Excuse me for not noticing this before, but aren't the emergency exits marked "Emergency Exit"?
I remember my first flight vividly, and I remember sitting by an emergency exit enroute from MCI to TUL. I am absolutely certain that I knew better than to try to open the door. I didn't need to think about it, I didn't need to ask anyone, I knew that I wasn't supposed to open the emergency exit on the airplane.
How can anyone feel the need to defend an act of such utter stupidity? The act speaks for itself.
Well if they needed some air and opened the exit during flight I would be impressed and would recommend that whoever opened it write to the Guiness Book of World Records and ask to be entered as the world's strongest man.
Seeing that the article mentioned it was an exit 'window' that they opened. If you don't know the method of opening them means you have to pull the window in and then throw it out to get egress. The difference in pressure inside of the aircraft and the atmospheric pressure at cruise means that a very large 'sucking' force needs to be overcome.
If I travel to another country I feel it is my responsibility to understand certain basic rules before I get there. That is why I have no sympathy for these passengers. BTW, Airmale there is nothing wrong with discriminating against stupidity, thank goodness.
