What's At The End Of The Runway?

Thu Oct 11, 2001 6:53 am

I was reading a thread about that Southwest 737 that almost hit a gas station after it landed in Burbank and couldn't stop.

I was just wondering where a plane might end up if it landed at your airport and (for some reason) couldn't stop.

the CO buildings, the airborne express buildings, or the new jersey turnpike. If it was really destructive, it could hit the trains, cranes or boats in the port.

CMH...

Runway 28L heading East
- After crossing Hamilton Road, it would end up at the airport Golf Course.

Runway 28R heading East
- After crossing Hamilton Road, it would end up in the grass between Sawyer Road and Hamilton Road.

Runway 10L Heading West
- After crossing Stelzer Road, it would end up in the Budget Rental Car building.

Runway 10R heading West
- After crossing Stelzer Road, it would end up in the woods (and possibly in the Tour Bus parking lot).

*Of course that is if it made it across those busy Roads at all!

NW-Elite:
You sure are right, there doesn't seem to be much else at the end of the runways at IAH.

But...
At HOU, they would hit Airport Blvd. and the rental car places.

in ATL...

If the plane was using the North runways...

heading east... it would probably hit the Ford factory.
heading west... I think there is a spot that is not "built up", it's kinda like a hole. I guess the plane would go in there.

If the plane was using the South Runways....

heading east... it would hit a big interstate (75, I think)
heading west... it would go into the big parking lot.

Not 100% sure, but I think that's right.

LHR at one end a main road and the long stay car park, at the other a sewage plant.Bet the fire service would love that one!

EWR

22L..it would end up in the employee parking LOT F

4R...it would end up at the Exit 14 toll plaza for the NJ Turnpike

29..it would end up on Route 1 & 9

11..it would end up on the NJ Turnpike

Any overruns of those runways definitely would not be good.

The other runway has cornfields on both ends.

At East Midlands, taking off on 27, an aircraft would just about end up on the start and finishing straight of the Donington Park motor racing circuit - in fact, if it was moving at any speed, it might just cross the line ahead of the rest of the pack  Smile

Off of 09, its the M1 motorway, then fields, and then Kegworth village!

Here in FRA it would end up down the hill and onto a high traffic highway if Rwy 07 is in use. Case Rwy 25 is in use it would slide over Rwy 18 and into the woods

Depending on which runway was in use at DCA, the plane would wind up in the Potomac River or would hit a concrete barrier.

At IAD I believe it would wind up in the woods after running off any of the three runways.

CPT would see you hitting the N2 motorway and then bush and on the other side, Modderdam road and a residential suburb. (but this is quite far from the end of the runway)

im at EGCC, so if a plane (god forbid) goes off the runway, itll have a few hundreds of feet to stop if it came off 24R/L before ploughing into the railway ditch, if this doesnt stop the plane, then houses.
And for 6 R/L trees and a ditch, so not very promising is it lol, dont fly in winter when the snow falls, is my motto lol.
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

At PDX...

10R/28L...
West-Bound - a big field and if it went far enough, Columbia Edgewater Country Club
East-Bound - a busy road to the airport and a big field, maybe if we're lucky the Customs house  Big grin

10L/28R
West-Bound - if far enough, the airport fire station and fuel farm (that's a bit out of reach, but...)
East-Bound - long-term parking

3/21
North-Bound - the dike between the airport and the Columbia River
South Bound - Golf course

Would hate to see it though!

Tom

Runway 23 a busy road and tons of businesses. Same with Runway 14. A 40ft dropoff into trees on 32. And trees, trees and a short skip over two roads for 5.

At GSO.

At NCL/EGNT, from Runway 7 you would cross a small road before going into a field and ultimately a motorway. Runway 25, straight into the Newcastle Metro rail track and then dual-carriageway and also grass,

If an airplane overshot the runway @ PNS
(Pensacola Regional Airport in Pensacola Florida) it would run into the zone intended for just that very thing landing mishaps, a stretch of land just before the runway and after that has for the most part nothing on it, if for some reason the plane went past that zone then it would hit a fairly major highway, ethier Langley Avenue or Summit Blvd. Depending on direction of plane.

-rwy 10 departure end: Airport Access Road, and field
-rwy 28 departure end: 8' hurricane protection levee, and brush clearing
-rwy 01 departure end: Veterans Hwy, field, and Interstate 10

5R - a really busy road.
5L - Textron, Fleet, or Helicopter Services Hangers.
23L - the LOC antenna, and approach lights for 5R might stop it, otherwise another busy road.
23R - long term parking section M or something like that.
16 - a swamp, then somebody's dining room
34 - if it took out the blast fence for 16, a plaza with a bunch of worthless stores.

WLG, Wellington - New Zealand

If the plane went off the runway heading north first it would encounted trolly bus wires (electrical) which would probaly fry everyone and then into the bay

If the plane went off the runway heading south it would land first on rocks and then probaly rest in a sewage processing plant

If landed rwy. 04 (ILS equipped) and didnt stop:

hits free-trade zone and industrial parks: factories. DELL ASIA PACIFIC's factory is to be hit and BOSCH. if more destructive, INTEL, SEAGATE, QUANTUM, AMD, .... MOTOROLA (possibly)

If landed rwy. 22 (Visual only) and didnt stop:

hits fish village and soon into the sea!!!

At GOT you would end up in the woods, any direction. But if you had a lot of speed you might make it all the way down to the highway, which is a few hundred meters nort of the airport.

Actually at LHR it would not end up in the Perry Sludge Works unless it swerved. In both cases if they could travel that far they would end up on the M25 slip road, or better yet the M25.

At the other end it would be the Long Stay Carpark and if they swerved a bit the BA maintenance base and also I wouldn't like to be coming out of Hatton Cross train station at the time a fully loaded 744 ploughed into it.

On RWY 27 in SAN if the metal light poles used for ILS approaches did not destroy the plane then it would end up through a fence into the old navy training center. If on RWY 9 through a jet blast wall and onto a busy street.
