AMS Schiphol

Thu Oct 11, 2001 3:36 pm

Hi

I'm going to fly from HEL-AMS-IAD on saturday. There is a good 2 hours to wait in AMS so where should I head for some spotting. Should I (is it even possible to) leave the transit-area. I read that there is a Panorama Terrace but it is not open for public anymore.

I think that the best place for some spotting will be the passenger area behind customs in which you have an open view to most gates.
You'll be dry anyway... Smile/happy/getting dizzy
So put on your walking shoes and take a nice walk around all gates.

Yes, I agree. You have a good view of the ramp and runways from the transit hall. But be prepared to walk a little if you want to see different areas of the ramp.
You can not access the panorama from the transit hall, and you will not be allowed to leave it for the 2 hours you will be there.
I work on the ramp at pier E. You can see from inside the hall.
Have fun.

SUDDEN.
When in doubt, flat out!

From the end of pier E, you have an excellent view of aircraft taking off from rwy 09, if it is in use. A lot of aircraft also taxi a few feet from that place.

Well this is good news as I believe my flight is leaving from Pier E (Northwest). And even if the flight leaves some other Pier, I'm still lucky enough to see some action in Schiphol.

Thanks guys  Smile

Enjoy this airport; it's huge, comfortable, safe and the terminal and shopping center are spacious. AMS has a quiet busy aircraft traffic. Concerning the weather; saturday will be a fine day in Holland. Sunny, few clouds and 20 degrees Celcius. Have fun and a good flight!

The panorama terrace was opened again last year, and it has been completely "redesigned", so its now even bette than before. There are restaurants next to it, and entrance to the terrace is free and it is open to the public
have a nice stay!

The panorame terrace cannot be reached from the transit area.
And besides that, it's closed for security reasons at the moment as a result of what happened on doom day september 11.
Don't know when it will open again.

I did not know that, could be a long time before reopening again, last time it was closed for a year or so? Sad

I was there this summer just spotting. I sat up there almost the whole day. It was very warm and I was free. Bought a beer and just tought for myself "Ahh, this is life." The sound and the smell.
People are going up there to study there homework as well as spotting. A man was sleeping! Children playing.
Life is good my friends!  Big thumbs up

A very good spot is gate D28. It provides a view of aircraft lining up for departure on runway 06/24and a good view on runway 01R/19L and has some very relaxing seats. However,it's a long walk from D28 to the E pier. The end of the E-pier offers a view on runway 27 and this one is often used.
