Help Me, I'm So Confused About Lufthansa!

Fri Oct 12, 2001 7:31 am

I'm really confused about Lufthansa. Besides in Europe, to what countries do they fly and with what aircraft and from what city? I see pictures that say from MUC-SIN and FRA-SIN and other stuff and I'm really confused. Is MUC a really big hub for Lufthansa too? Anything else about Lufthansa would be great too. Do they have PTVs? Is the service good? Are their planes comfortable? Etc.?

Hi, yes, LH is building up Munich as their second hub after Frankfurt. They have added more international flight from Munich.
From Frankfurt most international flights are on 747 400, to Asia for example, even though they still fly older 747s to JFK for example. Even on their newest 747 400 LH does not have PTV in economy class. But their planes are very well maintained, the service is very good and efficient. Seat pitch used to be better but they changed it and becomes smaller but comparable to other majors. Experience LH, it is a nice airline, for a good and simple experience.

What about ORD and SIN? What cities do they fly to from there and what aircraft do they use? I saw an A343 in ORD last month, but I didn't know if it was going to MUC or FRA. Where do they use their A310s as well? Thanks so far!

First, to find out what aircraft and routings Lufthansa use, you can check it out on their website: www.lufthansa.com
Just basically, they use B747-400's, a few 200's and A340-200's on their longhaul routes. On the medium and short haul routes you have the A300-600, A310-200, A319, A320, A321, 737-400, Canadair and AVRO RJ 85.
Frankfurt is the biggest and primary hub, however Munich is #2. There are several non-stop flights between Munich and a number of destinations in North America, Middle and Far East.

Having flown with Lufthansa recently from Frankfurt to Beijing and from Shanghai to Frankfurt, I can say that the service was quite good. Not Singapore Airlines style but very solid, the FA's were polite and courteous and the food was pretty good for airline food.
The seats were fairly comfortable (I flew economy) and you even have adjustable head rests on them. Pitch was pretty good and so was the legroom. Unfortunately, no PTV's. Hope this helps.

I flew Lufthansa Airlines flight 435 from ORD-MUC on an Airbus A340-300, very, very nice flight. Depends on what time you saw the A340 at ORD, the A340 to MUC leaves around 4:40 PM.

The ORD-MUC route is operated only by the A340-300, not -200.

Lufthansa operates long hauls from Munich only with A340-300 to:
Newark (daily)
Chicago (daily)
Los Angeles (3 flights a week)
San Francisco (3 flights a week)
Sao Paulo (3 flights a week)
Johannesburg (new 3 flights a week)
Shanghai (new 3 flights a week)
Hong Kong (daily)
Singapore (3 flights a week)

San Francisco and L.A. are operated with a daily B744 during summer season.

Depend on the worlds situation also Lufthansa is
cutting its intercontinental services.
The A340-200 was supposed to be taken off North Atlantic schedules due to last winter schedule and
was since then only used sporadicly.

But now due to lower demand it is more often used again. But this often also depends on the actual demand so a route can be operated by a mix of A340-200 and -300.

In Munich LH stationed right now only A340-300 which fly to EWR,SIN,ORD,TLV,GRU. B747-400 operate to
MUC the following schedule FRA-LAX-MUC-LAX-FRA and the same way to SFO so every day there´s a different
aircraft to be seen.
A340 stay for about ten days in Munich and then are going to be changed as another aircraft arrives, mostly
on a scheduled flight from FRA.

The third airport that handles A340 flights is Düsseldorf
with a daily EWR departure, here the aircraft flies
MUC-EWR-DUS-EWR-MUC. Berlin had another A340
service to IAD but this was cancelled due to terror attacks!

The A310-300 seems to be sold as soon LH has found
what they´re going to buy for them. They are mainly
used on trunk european routes just as LHR,CDG,CPH and
flights within Germany. They were used also for North Atlantic and Middle East flights but these times are long gone!!!
