Sightseeing Flights Over Antarctica

Fri Oct 12, 2001 7:48 am

I just found the Antarctica photos in the database, all of which seem to be taken from Qantas aircraft. Does Qantas offer regular sightseeing flights? What's the deal? What about Air New Zealand? I remember their DC-10 crash many years back...

If you search, Lindy, I think you will find a thread about this that was started a few weeks ago by, of all people.. United Airline.
Incidentally, where is that kid? haven't seen Des lately...
Next flight.... who knows.

I just read this thread. I can't find that other thread. Could you put a link to it?

Air New Zealand suspended Antarctic flights permanently after the DC10 crash at Mt. Erebus on 28th November 1979. That flight (TE901) was going to be the last flight anyway.

In essence, it's not a regular thing, but a travel agent (Croydon Travel in Sydney) charter a 744 and fly it over the Antarctic every 6 months or so. Not exactly cheap, around $1500 if memory serves. Leave Sydney, and fly to Antarctica and back, all up, I think about a 12 hour journey or so.
You circle around some of the Antarctic stations, and they put the Captain speaking to the stations over the PA so everyone can hear. Very spectacular.

Thanks, all. Don't think I'll be flying over Antarctica anytime soon....
