PIA To Get Four 777's On Easy Terms

Fri Oct 12, 2001 8:53 am

Pakistan International Airline may get four Boeing 777s on easy terms

IQBAL MIRZA

.......KARACHI : The Boeing company is understood to have offered four Boeing 777 aircraft for sale to the Pakistan International Airline (PIA). The possibility of this deal was reportedly initiated by Finance Minister, Shaukat Aziz, who is in Washington these days. He has summoned a senior PIA official to Washington for discussions and to have a close look into the feasibility of purchasing the aircraft.

.......The official left here on Thursday to study the offer and advise the finance minister about the suitability of the aircraft for the national carrier.

.......The aircraft, popularly known as 'white tail', are ready for delivery any time. These were, in fact, manufactured for the United Airlines (UA) of the United States of America (USA), but because of the total chaos which prevails in the aviation industry in the USA following the terrorist attacks on the Trade Towers and Pentagon in Washington, the UA has expressed its inability to take the delivery of the aircraft.

.......These brand new aircraft are now parked at the Boeing facility in Seattle and could be made available immediately on easy terms. The Boeing 777 has been in use in the United States and several other countries for a considerable period of time. It is considered to be an efficient aircraft which would fit into PIA's oft revised fleet plan.

.......In case the terms and conditions are agreeable to Boeing and PIA, the four Boeing 777 could be inducted into PIA's fleet anytime to give support to its depleted fleet and enable the airline to move towards the much talked about 'turn around' earlier than expected.

What do you think ?

It sounds great but is it the best choice. PIA is going through a very rough situation especially with the conflict going on. The 777 would look great in the PIA colors but it wouldn't be the best financial decision for them.

What are PIA's loads like right now? I imagine that many Westerners are shunning them for the time being but I suppose that much of their traffic is made of expat Pakistanis and travel to and from various Muslim countries.

The fact that the Finance Minister is pursuing the possibility suggests that acquisition of new, cheap aircraft is a real priority for Pakistan. I hope it works for them.

Ah, politics.
Not that the 777 isn't a good choice for PIA to replace their 742's, but I am guessing that this is part of the elbow grease going on between the two countries over the present Afghan war. Last I had heard PIA was in deep financial doodoo, and was in a real quandary how to replace aging aircraft.
But it's a good thing, I think for Pakistan, and I'm sure Boeing is happy to get rid of these.
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.

Any elbow-greasing that the US could give to Pakistan at this time is only just returns for the co-operation from the Pakistani government in the fight against terrorism.

Pakistan's President has indeed taken a huge gamble in doing so, and I certainly hope that when the dusts settle in the area, Americans would also consider visiting the country to support its tourism industry. This is a new Pakistan that has returned to the international community of nations.

PIA's simple but quite smart livery on the B777s certainly would be a beautiful addition to the list of B777 operators. A new livery to usher in this new fleet addition would be a bonus.

This is all news to me. Since when did UA decide not to take 4 777s? They are retiring old 737s,727s and possibly storing/selling some 744s...but I didn't think they had any thoughts about reducing their 777 fleet. Maybe they will be leased and still owned by UA. Boeing chiefs are saying that there are no cancellations at the moment, maybe some deferrals, but no cancellations. Still, I guess almost anything is possible in the airline industry today.

Who actually owns PIA? Even if it is the Govt, where is the money for the new a/cs.

Sure The triple sevens would boost the image of the airline, but with the current crisis in the airline industry, not to mention the volatile situation in the sub continent area, i doubt if it will be a good move to buy new planes now.

Anyway we have to wait and see...eventually it will be good for PIA to replace their ageing fleet, but the catch is, do they need to invest now?

Cheers,
Thomas.

Invest now or later?

I am certain PIA had to fork out quite a bit of money to lease the B747-300s fro Cathay Pacific Airways. With these returned, there must surely be quite a bit of capacity needed (when the war against Afghanistan stops of course).

It probably is a good time to commit themselves to some attractively-priced and brandnew B777s! I am certain that equally attractive credit terms would be extended to the government of Pakistan and PIA (in view of the thawing of US-Pakistan relations).

If PIA would take four low-priced 777s to prevent them from baking in the desert then they will most likely replace the early-70s quartet of PW-powered seconhand 747-200s PIA still has and apparently still uses (at least for back-up).
From what I´ve heard the 743s from CX don´t cost too much lease money, are only mid-aged and are the "cream of the fleet". I don´t think PIA has the money for the very expensive 777 except the US government offers them a fantastic deal because of Pakistan backing the attacks on Taliban country. Otherwise it would be more clever from PIA to wait a few months and then take a handful of early 90s 744s that are currently for sale.

Where they considering the 777 in 1998/99.

Correct me if I am wrong.

justplanes.com did mention a few weeks ago, that the chairman of PIA was considering to purchase 4-5 brand new planes. But the type was not mentioned.

But considering the facts, its a good proposition, in my opinion.

This is great news has anybody got anymore details on the 777's? what type are they (ER?) and what engines have they got?

Someone asked a question about the seat factor of PIA its around 65% at the moment and they were expected to make a profit this month. The link below is about a visa issue and PIA but it gives important info on PIA's current situation.

If they do take these 777's they have to have a new livery I suggest a more modern version of their green/gold livery or floral livery.

Can someone say what the probability of this proposition is ?

Will it be likely, or is just one of those made up stories.

Great news, hope it is true already PIA have misssed two great opportunities of getting both the 777 (from Cathay Pacific) and the 747-400 (from Boeing which were cancelled by Philippine Airlines), the CX deal didnt go through as they werent happy with PK's schedule of payments for the 747-300s and the Boeing deal was botched because of the then Pakistani prime minister Nawaz and the airlines Chairman Khaqans ulterior motives regarding the carriers future which they planned on selling off to SABRE, the 744's were offered to PK at a much lower than market value, I think they should strike while the Iron is hot Smile

I agree w Airmale. This is a golden opportunity for PIA to get some new 777's damn quick! No doubt Boeing will be anxious to deal and PIA could get a good discount. More importantly...there is the prospect of further PIA 777 orders down the line.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

The Business Recorder article does not mention that PIA's Gulf routes also include Bahrain, Muscat, Sharjah, Al Ain, Kuwait and Dammam, as for the livery, PK definitely need a new scheme badly, if not feasible then for the time being they should stick with their present livery and paint the 747-300s also in it, it would look better with the engines also painted Green, I have already written to the M.D about it, otherwise going back to the floral tail scheme is a good idea too, but instead of White they should use Silver paint like Virgin Atlantic to enhance the tail, the "Pashmina" design on the tail itself could also have been better having seen superb examples on the Makli tombs just outside Karachi, on high quality hand woven carpets and ofcourse Bridal wear, heres the latest photo of the floral design, I dont find it that great anymore, could be much better Smile

The problem with this article is they do not have significant facts right. UA has taken delivery of all their scheduled aircraft (777s, anyway) so far - there aren't any just sitting at Boeing Field. (or at least there wasn't a few days ago).

Now, UA does have 2 aircraft scheduled for delivery in December, 2 in January, and 1 each in February, March and May. So there exists the possibility that there will be 777's available, but I highly doubt it. As Dalecary said, 777s are not the aircraft that are being shunned - it is the 727s and 737-200s. In other words, I have serious doubts about the validity of this article. The only thing I can think of is that PIA would be taking UA's options that have been deferred because of the current situation.

Sorry to sound a little pesimistic, even though by nature im quite the opposite.......but chances are you will not see any of those supposed B777's in PIA livery......note that stories like this come out all the time that PIA is going to get that and do this and what not......few months ago something also came up i think about PIA getting some Airbuses. Only thing that ever happened in nearly ten years is a few rentals here and there(Currently CX 743's).......not unless i actually see a B777 in PIA livery.....i think its useless to even speculate what PIA is going to do.......
Sad when you consider this is the same airline that one of Asia's finest right uptil the late 70's......

Hmmm, our US Government dollars at work again. Sort of a 'thank you' for not hindering with Afghanistan?

Why not Airbus? PIA loves the great satins, Boeing company??

According to the aerotransport site

It suggests that PIA are intending for 4 777-200 ER, originally for UA ??
