Safest Airliner or Plane

Thu Dec 03, 1998 5:55 am

What is the safest plane in the world?? In my opinion the L-1011 is the safest plane ever made because between 15-20 years only 4-7 planes have been lost or unflyable, and in my opinion the L-1011 should have out lasted the DC-10 because it looked 100 times better and was much safer.

The dc-10 was a cheap rush to production aircraft
that killed allot of people as it refined itself
over the years. boeing -n- lockheed put allot
of time and effort into making awsome i'st generation widebodies and it shows ( overall)
Lot's of valid redundancy went into most jets scince there inception. the diesel - 8 . is a
tank . crash , cut a wing , it can take a beating
with a competent driver. in my opinion not to take anything away from the "10",,,, douglas beancounters,,, paved the way for there demise ,,,
unfortunatlly, with the "10" cut money here cut
money there! But theres abunch of them out there.
i love to watch,,, but dont care much to ride on them.

As far as I know, no L-1011s have ever crashed due to mechanical circumstances. Some have been bombed and windsheared, but there were no blatant problems like the DC-10 cargo door fiascos.

In my opinion the 757's 767's are the safest in the world to date with just one 757 being lost.

I belive that the safest airliner is the 747-400. I don't know of any crashes and considering how many people have flown on it.

Iainhol: Actually, as I recall, the Concorde did crash once, if you want to know when, reply.

I'd have to say that the oldest and safest airliner is the L1011. and the safest plane has to be the Cessna Citation because not many of them have crashed due to mechanical problems.

I think there were three 757 crashes. Two occurred in South America. One was due to bad navigation in Cali (AA). The other, if I remember correctly, was due to a ramp agent leaving a cover on a pitot tube so that the speedometer readings were bad, causing a stall not long after takeoff. Obviously, both were human error. I think the first one was due to a hijacking in China, where it collided with another plane on landing.

Lockheed Accidents

Thu Dec 03, 1998 10:46 am

Hi Paul :

I think the safest fleet would be B767 and B777.
If you visit www.lockheed.com, you will see that L-1101 has the highest rate of having accident.
L-1101 is too old to fly. There is no U.S. airline who still used L-1101 (except Delta). I believe this kind of aircraft will be replaced soon ...

Tradewinds out of Greensboro uses the L1011, but for cargo and charter ops.

On my opinion...I think all the aircraft are all safe..it just the matter of maintenance of the aircraft and the pilot's skills.

I think it's sort of hard to decide which plane is the safest, cause not all planes have been out as long as others, etc, but the MD-11 is one of the safest passenger airliners.

boy, thats a hard one. MD11 is right. There are such big differences in time on the line. While they have all had their mishaps (not always the aircrafts fault),
I woulf feel comfortable choosing the 747 series.

Camile you're right. As far as bizjets go the Citation has an excellent saftey record.
Unlike early Lears that would eat the pilot and spit him out if his instrument skills werent 100% perfect. Many a Lear pilot cartwheeled down the side of the runway.
If all categories of aircraft are considered, the Citation has to be the safest aircraft produced.
For commercial airliners, id feel good choosing the 747 series. Lets not forget,
not all aircraft incidents are the aircrafts fault.

Indeed, the MD11 has the honor of being the safest airliner. The B757 is also very reliable, with no crash due to technical reasons.
The A330/340 is also very safe, but still new and has had no fatal accidents due to technical error.
The only planes I feel uncomfortable in are Tupolev 154, for they are not equipped with oxygen masks.
It are the airlines and pilots who are to blame in most accidents, not the aircraft producer (in most cases). Remember, an accident is the result of several causes, many causes would not exist with proper safety management.
