Does Delta Have Olympic Influence

Sun Oct 14, 2001 4:29 am

In 1996 the Olympic Games were in Atlanta and in 2002 they are in Salt Lake City. Both of these cities are Delta hubs and it's a fact that they make huge money off of these events. Any ideas if Delta has any influence in this or is the Olympic commitee partial to Delta?

Cheers,
Mike

I've wondered this myself. In fact, Cincinnati is trying to be the host city for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International is another Delta hub.

Delta is also the only American airline flying from Athens (2004), Greece to the US. I remeber that Delta suspended the Oslo-JFK service shortly after the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994. But there is probably no connection between the IOC and Delta Air Lines.

I thought Swissair was the official Olympic airline. Perhaps better to say "was"?

Maybe those of you who think Uncle Leo is on the Olympic Committee should consider the possibility of coincidence or better yet the strength of Delta's hub network and route map.

If I am not mistaken, the "official" airline can vary from Olympic games to Olympic games. I think that the airline bids for the right to tout themselves as the official carrier. In 1984 Pan Am was the official carrier to Sarajevo, United has also been the official carrier I think, of course Delta, Quantas, among others. Right or wrong?

For the right amount of $$$$, anyone can have olympic influence. The IOC (internation olympic comitee) is nothing more than institutionalized bribery.

SR is the official airline of the IOC, not of any particular Olympic Games.
