Awesome Photo!

Tue Oct 16, 2001 9:36 am

This was taken from a hot air balloon. As you can see, the hot air balloon was over the approach path into Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport. It was taken in 2000 I believe.

Good photo?????

 Big thumbs up

Well, we had one fly right over TVC when I was out there the other evening. Planes taking off and landing still.

It would be a lot better if the resolution were improved. It's so grainy it would be really easy to fake. Not an accusation, but that's why I don't say it is "great". But it is a nice photo, must have been a fun ride. Big thumbs up Smile/happy/getting dizzy

What?!?!?! A Fokker 100? The hell is no! NWA doesn't have any F-100 or TVC doesn't serve any of airline F-100. It's DC-9-10. It looks smaller jet. Look at again closer the photo: Does F-100's wing have any fairings?

Big777jet

PS - it's not CRJ the engine is much smaller.

The lighting reflection angle on the plane looks inconsistent with the rest of the picture.

If it is real.... it looks like a CRJ b/c it has winglets... but the engines dont look like the high bypass ones, so it also looks like a DC-9.

This is Concorde, no doubt about it.

Did an eight year old take the plane icon and stick it in there?  Laugh out loud

Seriously, it looks like a nice view, but how can that be real?

shouldn't the side of the plane that is facing us be at least partially in shadow, given the apparent angle of the sun???

But is it really possible for a balloon to fly into the airport restricted airspace?
And look at those trees...I have never seen an airport with those kind of trees, not the equal size......
It just doesn't look right to me.

1) the lighting on the airplane is different than that on the ground (no shadows).
2) what's the golf course that the aircraft is flying over?

It's Real

Tue Oct 16, 2001 2:23 pm

I'm quite sure that this picture is legitimate.

-According to my Jepp plate, Runway 10 at TVC faces approximately 100 degrees. As we all know, the sun sets to the WEST (approx. 270 degrees), assuming this is a dusk shot. The the shadow cast by the sun clearly shows about a 10 degree difference between the angle of the sun and the approach path of the aircraft.

-It is entirely possible and in fact safer to direct hot air baloons directly over airports. Usually, most traffic in the immediate vicinity of an airport is very low, as aircraft are either just lifting off or just touching down. It would be unwise for the balloons to manoever 5 miles away from the feild, eye level with aircraft at the outer marker of the approach.

-according to NWA.com, TVC is serviced by DC-9s of various models. This is clearly an NWA DC-9.

-the graininess (sp) of the aircraft is consistent with the graininess of the landscape; doesn't seem to be a cut and paste job (unless it was done by a pro - and knowing the inhabitants of this forum, that's not terribly likely).

If anyone would care to refute any of this, I'd love to hear it.

Cheers
buhh bye

RE:DC9-30 Or -50

TVC very rarely is served by DC9-10's. In the summer, we have all DC9-50's. Very ocasionally we see a -30/-40 in the summer. Its not a CRJ, and damn sure isnt a FK100.

It is a real photo. It was featured in Traverse Cities local newspaper. Obviously the person that scanned this isnt fluent with resolution, unsharp masking, and sharpening.

It's a NW DC-9....the tail and engine layout give it away.

Seven Five, he's where, about a quarter mile west of Garfield Rd.? I know that area has long been ignored for development ( a miracle in a town that has grown like TVC) for the very reason you're looking at.

No doubt, the quality is crappy, but, how often do you see a photo from that angle, regardless? To bad we couldnt see a much better quality photo.

It's just impossible for a hot-air balloon to fly OVER the airport, that's impossible.

In regards to the shadow prob, if the plane were taking off, wich it looks like it is, it may be at an angle where the sun shines on the whole upper surface.

The aircraft was landing, and, TVC isnt exactly O Hare. Hot Air Balloons can fly over. Its a different air space than you probably have.

It must be fake... If you look at the starboard wing, there is no shadow from the fuselage on it... and when you look at the ground, the sun is so low... the shadows are long. So, if this were a true picture, there would be a shadow on the wing too!

Here is the caption that accompanied the photo...

"A Northwest Airlines DC-9 passes under the balloon, flying above the Traverse City Country Club in Traverse City as it approaches Cherry Capital Airport. The balloon was flying at an altitude of 4,000 feet as the jet was cleared to land."

Look at the tailplane - one side is longer than the other - I saw this by blowing it up in a paint package.

I didnt realise a/c wings were disproportionate?

I am surprised that all the people saying its fake havent said "Wow, how did they get that plane to look like it was in the trees"?  Nuts

and ask him if you can see a better quality version of it. He is a nice guy, I know his sister.

Ask him how ligitimate the photos is.

That photo reminds of one that I took during some aerial photography last spring in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas area. I didn't even notice this in the frame until after it was scanned and I was QC'ing it. It's an American Airlines MD-80 on short final for DFW:
