Did UPS Quit Pax Operations?

Tue Oct 16, 2001 2:59 pm

I haven't heard anything recently about UPS 721's being used for charters. Is this still going on or was it not profitable?

Thanks, Ryan

This operation ran for the past few years using 5 721's converted to pax at the weekends. UPS recently announced that they were ending this program.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

As far as I know UPS still operate all (six ??) 727-1s which can be converted to 113 pax configuration. However I don´t know if they have been used as passenger jets lately.

UPS quit doing pax stuff about three months ago. My guess is it was never a financially viable operation but provided some good PR....the whole thing was always an experiment anyways. We now have excess 727's and crews and 4 or 5 727's have been parked rather than do heavy maintence on them (this was prior to 9/11).

Pax operations were profitable for UPS and did very well. The reason why UPS stopped pax operations was because other charter operators were operating larger, newer aircraft (737, 75, A-320 and larger). UPS did not want to invest in aircraft just for passenger operations. UPS decided to stop the operation a few months ago before it would turn into a money losing operation due to the increased competition.

With the 75's and A-300's there have been some 72's parked. Why operate 2 72's when one 75 can do the job.
