SIA suspends three Asian services

SINGAPORE, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines (Singapore: SIAL.SI - news) (SIA) said on Wednesday it is suspending flights to three destinations at the end of October due to adverse economic conditions faced by the aviation industry.

The destinations affected are Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in Malaysia as well as Macau, which are all currently served by two flights per week, the carrier said in a statement.

SIA said the move is part of an effort to curb costs as forward bookings have declined, while costs have risen sharply due to hikes in insurance premiums and security costs following the September 11 air attacks in the United States.

BKI and KCH are no surprise- SQ has been capacity limited by the Malaysain Govt. on these 2 routes ever since the services were inaugurated. There's no real loss in flying a twice weekly A310.

I have always wondered why SQ has maintained just two weekly flights on the KCH and BKI routes for around 10 years now. Makes no sense. And surely, there must be much more traffic on the route to justify SQ atleast a daily service.
I wonder if these will be transferred to Silk Air, so they can fly daily with smaller Fokker aircraft or something.

The Malaysian Government does not allow SIA to operate daily flights into both KCH and BKI for quite some time. Both the state governments is asking the federal government to allow SIA to increase their services, but this was not acknowledged by the feds. Now, passengers have got no choice but to take MAS's flight into SIN.

Regards.
