Of the major airlines, only Alaska and Southwest managed to turn a profit during the difficult 3rd quarter.
Alaska reported a net income of $25.3 million ($0.95 per share), or $7.3 million ($0.27 per share) excluding federal financial assistance following the September 11 terrorist attacks. This compares to $15.9 million ($0.60 per share) during the third quarter of last year.
Southwest reported a net income of $150.9 million ($0.19 per share). Excluding federal assistance and one-time special charges and gains, the carrier's third-quarter net income was $82.8 million ($0.10 a share). This compares to $184.3 million, ($0.23 per share) during the third quarter of last year.
