3 Engines Three Crew Members?

Fri Oct 19, 2001 10:08 am

Hey All!!

If an A/C has 3 engines for example does it mean that there have to be three crew members???

Thanks

No. It's all about how modern and automated the cockpits are.

B747-400 and A340's have a crew of two, even though they have four engines.

No, for example: MD-11 has 3 engines, but only 2 crew.

3 Man 737!

FYI, some 2 engine A/C had provisions for 3 crew members. Originally, United ordered all of their first B-737s with an engineer's seat. I have yet to see one, and not sure if any are around any longer.
The reason for the extra member was due to the fact the UA was hiring pretty low time pilots then (lol, ya "then") and thought it to be benificial to have another body up front. When it comes to decision making, it's always good to have a "tie-breaker!" I have to admit that I prefer a 3 man crew, just not in the confines of a 73!

Do all 727's have a 3-man crew, or was there ever a change there? What about 707's and DC-8's for that matter.?
Next flight.... who knows.
