Whats Your Favourite Spotting Area / Airport?

Fri Oct 19, 2001 7:59 pm

Hey guys,

Just thought I would start another post on this topic. I am lucky enough to live in Sydney and have the opportunity to spot at the busiest airport in Australia with access that nowhere else in the world has.

My favourite place is nicknamed 'the beach'. It's right next to taxiway alpha and the main n/s runway. You really have to experience it as I don't think any other place I have been is as good. You are mere metres from the taxiing aircraft, the jet blast and noise is incredible when a 74 goes past.

My other favourite in Sydney is nicknamed 'the mound'. Basically a hill of grass covered dirt not far from the northern end of the third runway. At night it's spectacular with jets passing overhead so close.

Even with the events happening at the moment we are still lucky enough to be able to spot without too much hinderance. So far.

So what's your favourite spotting area / airport?

Cheers,

mb

Manchester, UK. It has a dedicated viewing park with raised mounds to enable you to see over the fence, snack bar, shop and visitor centre. Taxiing a/c pass within feet of you. This area is best for the old runway. I understand they have replicated the facility adjacent to the new runway, but I have yet to visit. LBA has two good spots, one being right at the end of the runway allowing you to stand under a/c immediately following take off - that's when you realise how noisy the 737-200 is! Unfortunately LBA is fairly quiet so you have to pick busy charter day to visit.

The open-air observation deck (admission is free) atop the LAX building situated under the airport's theme structure (the massive arches) is my favorite spotting area. The 360' view allows action on all runways and taxiways plus most terminal areas to be observed from one location. Few of the world's airports can match the variety of domestic and international airlines and airliners that can be seen at LAX. Haven't heard whether my favorite spotting area remains open after the events of 9/11.

In November I will be traveling to FRA -- does it have a spotting area and, if so, at which terminal/area?

Aeroparque in San Juan is a great place to spot planes.

Hello Tango-Bravo,

FRA has got two spotting areas, one on each terminal (terminal 1 and terminal 2). Both are on the roof of the terminal, and you have quite a good view.
Admission fee is about DM 5 as far as I remember. You can visit both spotting areas with one ticket.
But as far as I Know, they have been closed after 11th September due to security reasons and I don't know if they are re-opened yet.

The one at LAX is pretty cool. I try to spend some time there whenever over in Santa Monica on business.

Manchester UK without a doubt. There's a pub right at the end of the runway called The Airport Hotel, but they have to be taking off on 24R for you to get the best experience. As the 747's turn and line up for take off, you get a blast from the engines, it's great!
One morning, last year, I got there really early and a 747 was taxiing for take off. As it turned to line up, it must've been heavy because I got a great blast of hot air (great coz it was a cold morning) and all the bins went flying...lol.
Just a shame they use 24L most of the time for take offs. Although, (not sure if this is still happening) they used to close runway 24L between 12 and 3 in the afternoon...heaven!
If they're not taking off on 24R then I'd say the spotting park at the other end of the runway.
Like LBA, I have yet to visit the new park, but hopefully, it will be as good as the old one.
Take care...Emma

MDW is extremely easy to see the planes taking off and landing on the runway in use from the fences surounding the world's busiest square mile. I view usually from the north-northwest side of the airport, as that is the easiest side to view from. I will generally sometimes go to wherever the planes are taxing.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

Don't forget that there are the hills west of LAX that has a beautiful view of the north runways. It's kind of eerie, where there are former residential streets where all the houses were torn down when the airport was expanded in the 60's, but one street is still open. As it crests a hill, you get a great view of the airport.
