Automatic Doors?

Sat Oct 20, 2001 3:28 am

Today i was flying from Doha international to Duai on Qatar Airways and the captain announced before we pushed back to the crew and he said : "Cabin Crew, please set doors to automatic" and when we landed he said : "Please Dis-arm emergency exits"

what did he mean by that?

The "automatic" system is the the emergency slides system ; before the take-off, the crew activates a little thing on the door which makes that if you open the door, the slides inflates, then after the flight the crew desativate the system, again on each door, so that when the doors open no slides come out.
Hope I answered your question.

hmmm.. i have been always asked this question by passengers as I am a flight attendant...
if you notice, there is a lever in every Cabin door that it moved to two colored areas.. green=> dis armed
red=> armed

when arming a door or setting it to automatic, there fore you are switching it to an emergency mode, where if an emergency ocured, the slide will be inflated as soon as the door is opened..

Doors are armed or set to the automatic before push back and kept like that during Taxi, take off and landing, until the plane is docked at the gate of the destination.

What nobody has mentioned so far is that as well arming the slide, arming the door also arms a door assist bottle. This bottle contains compressed nitrogen. If the door is opened when armed the pressure in this bottle is released and is piped to a cylinder attached to the door and frame. The nitrogen will then assist in getting the door open.
