Swissair's A340-600s

Sat Oct 20, 2001 6:40 am

With Swissair in bankruptcy and its future very, very uncertain, what is the exact status of its large pending order for the A340-600? Has it been officially cancelled? The SR order for this aircraft was an important one, and if the aircraft are not delivered, will it be a major blow for the A346 programme?

The A345/346 programmes are very good ones, but could they now be the wrong aircraft at the wrong time due to the world economy and the events of 11 Sept?

I think you can say good-bye to Swissair's A346 orders, considering that the proposed Crossair takeover doesn't even include all of SR's A330's. With the amount of money required to simply recapitalize Crossair, I doubt there will be enough extra capital to spend on new (and likely unnecessary) aircraft in the short-to-medium-term. I'd also argue that Sabena's A343 orders are history, and that AR's A343 and A346 orders are also gone, considering their precarious financial position.

I suspect that most airlines are going to need to conserve cash for a while until demand picks back up; moreover, there are going to be a lot of cheap used aircraft out there...

Swissair's MD-11s are probably going to UPS or Fedex, as seems to be the case with just about every retiring MD-11.

according to the current issue of the Flight International magazine, the fate of Swissair´s A346 orders depends on its future shareholders...

A few details:

Crossair will take over 13 A332 and 13 MD11 of Swissair, or better of Flightlease, the leasing arm of Swissair.

Airbus sold its A346 not to Swissair, but to Flightlease. FLightlease then had a contract with Swissair, to lease them out.

Flightlease has filed for bankrupcy, and so did SAirGroup and SAirlines (and with it Swissair). So, there won't be any company to take over those ordered A346.

If, however, Crossair and Airbus find a new deal, perhaps this order will go thru. Fedex, which acquired already all SR MD11's, won't be very unhappy to hear, that they don't have to take ovewr those SR MD11's.

So are the SR A346 delivery positions, and the aircraft themselves now availble for purchase? Has any airline expressed any interest at all or maybe a leasing company. It will be very akward for Airbus to have the the A346 production line produced white-tails so very early in the programme.

Actually, AR has not canceled thier A346s orders, and long-haul flights to Miami are starting again in about two weeks.
