Was I Hallucinating?

Mon Oct 22, 2001 2:03 am

this was a few years ago:

We went to pick my dad up at EWR, and we had to take the monorail to a diff. terminal. Between A-B or B-C, i think i saw a plane that was painted half NW and half KLM (i liked the back half the most, klm). Was i hallucinating or dreaming?

The reason that you dont see these any more is that they were causing utter chaos for ground ATC. They were finding it hard to keep track of each. The plane taxis in front of them as a NWA and then turns towards another runway or terminal and all of a sudden it's a KLM plane and they were causing problems for safety etc.

Artsyman, are you serious. In ATC school you are taught to look at your ground radar to identify and not use your vision.

Well I am not in management at NWA or KLM so I cant swear by this information, but we were just discussing it the other day and that was the info that a few pilots gave and was agreed with by a few FA's and an ATC guy.

Maybe it was causing problems for pilots on the ground and not just ATC

Sure, ground radar is great if you've got it, but other pilots don't have it, so they're told to "Follow the KLM DC10 ahead of you." "Huh, all I can see is Northwest."

Critics of the BA world colours tails claimed ATC didn't like them, no-one could spot BA aircraft. But actually it made it easier, where at LHR or LGW there's dozens of BA planes on the move all the time, another aircraft could be told "Follow the BA Chinese Take-Away."
