KLM AMS-YYZ On MD-11, No More 743

Mon Oct 22, 2001 3:55 am

KLM is showing that they plan to switch from a their traditional 747-300 service to an MD-11 daily effective October 28th between Amsterdam and Toronto. Martinair's last 767-300 flight is planned for October 25th.

Offcourse this is sad news since the 743 is a very nice plane (except KLM' poor seat pitch). The good thing is that the MD11 is a plane too.

BTW: do anybody have some info about wich two KLM 743 (one M and one pour pax) that where retired earlier this year?

This is sad to hear, Lots of airlines all over the world are reducing capacity. But Pearson airport seems to be getting lots of cuts. Ie: Air France is bringing a 767-300 instead of an A340, Mexicana has reduced flights to 4 days a week from 7 days, Austrian Airlines & Virgin Atlantic are stopping flights altogether.

This is for all Canadian airports....demand is dropping when figuring sept11th + a sluggish economy...the pax levels are there, but the yields are not...they'll be back!

For YUL, we are down to the B767-300ER with KLM, after KLM upgraded from Md11 300 pax to 450 pax B747-300.

Transatlantic route are tough at the moment, even with smaller aircraft: try to look at the situation with a positive angle, at least the service is being maintained and on a daily service. So many route have been cut back completely, or suspended, that air connections that we once took for granted are now so difficult.

So many transatlantic routes are not operating, look what DL did with its winter schedule. Lets hope for the best.

I recall seeing MD-11s at YYZ very often during winter months. You'd get the odd 743 but winter service was mainly done be md-11s. I guess the switch is just routine and the 743 will be back in the spring.

Tg 747-300, KLM's PH-BUP was retired this year. Also, PH-BUK might have also been retired. I wish that KLM started using the 743 to IAD now that KLM's Atlanta service has been dropped. We here at IAD do not deserve the sorry Northwest DC-10 for service to Amsterdam. We want size, and you only get size with the 747-300. I sure do hope that I get to fly on a 743 the next time I fly on KLM/Northwest from IAD.

We used to get the 747-300 @ IAD in th early 90s,then came the switch. I took the flight in May 93 which departed around midnight!! I wish KLM came back to IAD as well now that we have again lost an airline(SABENA).

Last night I discovered that also PH-BUL (747-206SUD M) "Charles A Lindbergh" was withdrawn from use in April 01. I found this quite sad since i flew on "him" 23/03/01.
Anyone that can confirm this?

PH-BUL is still in service and arrived this morning in AMS from JFK as KL642.

AIRNZ, KLM's ATL service was flown using a 763, not a 743.

I flew the KLM B-747-300 - YYZ-AMS in 2000. I was lucky enough to get the "A" cabin (nose) with business class seats! Thank God. Have also flown the KL MD-11.
Nice aircraft, and thank God they have the wisdom to
have 3-4-2 seating, as opposed to the horrid 2-5-2.

Mind you, KLM has pretty bad legroom and pitch. My flight from AMS-SFO was TORTURE! AAAAAHHHHHH!
Also, those Flight Attendant uniforms HAVE TO GO.
Sheeeeesh! They look like they were first introduced in 1975!! Very plain and old-fashioned looking.

The PH-BUK is also still operating (did yesterday AMS-ORD-AMS and today AMS-DEL-AMS) just as the PH-BUM (today and tomorrow AMS-ORD-AMS) and PH-BUN (today AMS-JFK-AMS).

As for the PH-BUL. This one should have been retired last April. However due to fact that the PH-BUP was at the end of her economic life, KLM decided to retire the PH-BUP and not the PH-BUl (allthough the rumour that this will be the next B747 to be retired)

Regards

Martinair does incredible business out of YYZ to AMS.
Their in-flight service is very good, and the B-767-300 series is a beautiful, comfortable aircraft.
