Kai Tak Style Landings At CLE Today!

Mon Oct 22, 2001 9:05 am

For a period of about a half hour today, aircraft at CLE were following a Kai Tak style landing pattern today. Because of the Cleveland Browns game downtown, aircraft couldn't fly over the city. So, the aircraft had to use the ILS 28 approach because of southerly winds. For a while the winds were too strong for a crosswind approach to 28, so you have to land on 24L. But how do you land on 24 if you can't fly downtown? You have to fly the ILS 28, till about 1 mile out, then you fly around to 24 and land on 24. Watching these aircraft, it reminded me of the photos of Kai Tak, except for the a/c were lined up before the rwy.

I'll check it out at the next home game. I've seen a couple of short finals on 24, and they do cut 'em close.

I got there about noon, before the rain. The pilots were really good, as there were no missed approaches, though I think the pax. were not very happy. I never go to Hopkins without my camera, so I got some pics between the gusts of wind that proved too hard to combat to make a steady photgraph.

redngold, there was more. At gate B2, I noticed a strange looking 727, luckly he pushbacked and departed while I was there, so I saw it was a Transmeridian Airlines 727-200. With the fact that 28 had been reassigned for landing as the winds died down, the NOTAM that aircraft have to depart at Taxiway A, I was wondering if this 722 was going to get off the ground! I tell ya, the earth shook as the 722 put on full throttle! The little kids at the mound today were covering their ears and saying wow. On top of seeing a 727 turn into an STOL, there was a TWA/AA MD-80 that landed on 29 turned into an STOL as well. That MD-80 had full reverse thrust on, as he didn't get on the ground till between the 24's.

A 722 is quite capable of making a short field takeoff if it is not heavily loaded. Now that MD-80... was its main gear down already and the nose not down yet, or what?

I've seen Delta shoot approaches to 24L when everyone else is using 28. I don't think Delta likes 28.

Once the MD-80 crossed the 24's, it's main gear just touched. The spoilers and reversers deployed immediately after the main gear made contact.

I saw a Transmeridian 727 at the same gate when I was at Hopkins a few months ago. It is probably a regular charter.

How's the new west-side runway coming along?

Delta is weird about short runways, even if it's the active one, if there are longer ones available. At PVD, we have a 7,200 and a 6,100 and somedays the Northwest winds are really strong (real low pressure kinda days) or Southeasterly (real high pressure) they will use 16/34, but Delta might be the only ones taking off or landing in x-winds because they want a little more to work with. But it's funny watching Southwest take off for PHX in 4,000 and Delta using up 5,500 to get to ATL.

LOL, the new runways are slowly coming. I think, unless White and Coyne are still screwing things up. I hope it gets done, but I'll believe it when I see it.

JFK sometimes have some kaiTak Style landing, only a little bit extended base...

I still miss KaiTak! That would be excellent if I born 5 years earlier!

The new runway construction is suspended because of sulphurous runoff pollution from the slag they used for its base. The construction company has to remove all of the slag they put down in the runway and north apron areas. Some other slag they used to build a temporary road and they put down near NASA can stay for the time being.

This is part of a larger ongoing battle between the FAA, Ohio EPA, and the City of Cleveland Dept. of Port Control, which have been fighting about responsibility for various forms of runoff pollution for a long time.

It was quite interesting, seeing aircraft come towards you from the east, then turning away from you, and pointing dircetly at you at lower than normal altitudes from the northeast. My dad was sitting in our car and I yell to him to look up, and he couldn't believe it either! Seeing an MD-80 turning to the runway so close to us. The folk who are building the new Brookpark Rd. have created an enormous mound. I've climbed it several times, and you are almost as high as the aircraft, less a couple feet. It's really cool because you could practically wave to the people inside and they'd probably see you. I took a pic of a NW DC-9 following suit with Delta, from this mound, and you can see the aircraft is just slightly lower than me in the pic, when they are developed.

If a whole family was to stand on that mound, or a large group of tall people, and aircraft had to land on 24R for some reason, you could have St. Maarten day at CLE!

Sounds like I missed a good day at CLE. I'll have to take a trip to the mound soon.

Hopefully the runway will get finished but I have my doubts about it being ontime.

Anyone who has pic upload them (possibly to redngolds site) if they are not good enough for a.net. I would love to see them. I am always interested in pics at CLE. I have a good collection of my shots but I never get time to scan them.

Guys I just scanned some more photos from the spec deck. Haven't had time to upload them yet.

I might have to go to GeoCities premium service. Y'all are transferring too much data for my page to stay free (they say they'll start cutting it off)!

Let me clarify that: photos from the spec deck were taken back in May. The deck's still closed and off-limits to non-pax.
