Midwest Express Orders 717!

Midwest Express Airlines is ordering 20 Boeing 717 twin-jets, according to the PR Newswire/Airlines and Aviation page on Yahoo! Finance.

I guess it is time to replace those DC9-10's and DC9-30's. Seems like the 717 program isn't dead just yet!

Actually, new news. ME announced today that they have firmed up their orders from this spring, turning an LOI into a firm order.

A while back they were facing a pretty tough decision between the 717 and the A318. While it may look now as though 717 production is in trouble, YX decided that one of the most important factors when ordering new a/c was the continuation of the brand. YX is famous for having no middle seats, and the economics of the 318 would have necessitated a 2-3 seating config. After extensive polling of its customer base (who all were pretty pissed off about the idea of a middle seat), the airline decided that they would stick with their winning formula, thus ruling out the Airbus jets.

p.s. Interestingly enough, on every Skyway B-1900 D there is one middle seat--in the last row, seat 9B!  Big grin

I hope that this saves the line. there was speculation that this order would not be confirmed

However, it still doesn't make much difference in terms of total 717 orders because AA is only taking 30 rather than the 50 that TWA originally ordered.

TWFirst, you make a really good point. That makes me wonder a few things: First, is it possible Boeing could shut down production regardless of the new YX order? Also, I was wondering why YX went ahead with the Boeing order when the 717 is in trouble and doesn't have a family with larger compatible a/c (unlike the A318, 319, etc...). So this got me thinking--always a bad idea!--okay, Airbus is out for the reasons I said before. But what about Embraer? Skyway absolutely hates their Dornier RJ's and is looking to dump them for something else. Embraer has a great family of smaller RJ's and is now expanding into larger, 717-sized a/c. Therefore, YX and Skyway could have all a/c (except for those classic 1900's) from the same manufacturer, with lots of different sizes and much more commonality than they have now. I don't know much about the economics of Embraer a/c, but I've been really pleased with them every time I've taken one.
Anyway, I love the 717 and it'll look awesome in a YX livery, but these are just some random thoughts on the subject...

When will the first 717s be delivered to MidEx? I am considering flying them from my home here in Kansas City (one of the KS side suburbs actually, but using MCI) to Atlanta route. It will be my first flight with MidEx, and a 717 (if they were receiving them and using them on this market by then). I can't wait for it either way!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I knew they would not go A318.

I think if Boeing can give NWA a really good deal on the 717 they will order some 150+ to replace the DC9.

In the A318 vs 717 war going on at NWA, the lowest bidder will win NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

I do indeed like the B717 and hope production carries on. But with the fact that if no more orders are placed for this beauty, the production line will be ceased. Any operaters will then face problems, of course, apart from spare parts which they still can get from Boeing or other sources, one big problem remains; ie. what if in the future you need extra B717s for further expansion but they are no longer being produced? Ain't that a headache?

I cannot wait for the first YX 717 to come to MCI. Hello again, Andrew. In answer to your question, YX should receive their first 717 some time in 2003, if all goes well with the orders and production. Currently, on the MCI to ATL flight, they are using DC-9-10 aircraft on the non-stops. If you have to connect in Milwaukee, you would be flying on the DC-9-30. Either way, I would definitely take YX instead of Delta to ATL. A few weeks ago, I was on a TWA 717 from MCI to STL, which was my third 717 flight, and it was great.

The biggest 717 customer by far is Orlando, Florida-based AirTran Airways, a unit of AirTran Holdings Inc.(NYSE:AAI - news), which has 25 in its fleet and 28 more on order, plus options for another 47.

``We are operating under the assumption that we will take out firm orders. Should they decide to cancel the program we will find another aircraft for our fleet,'' said Tad Hutcheson, an AirTran spokesman.

I think a 717-300 would fit the bill. The 717 needs a family. How about it Boeing.

Its about time that NWA retire thier DC-9's. They should probably look into getting rid of the 747-200's too (in my opinion). Of course with all the trouble that every airline so going through we probably won't see this for a while.

Hear, hear! This new order will give the 717 program a fighting chance of surviving now, for the foreseeable future. If I did my math right, the 717 has 157 firm orders now, with 81 already delivered. That should keep the line open until at least early 2003. Hope Boeing is smart enough to follow thru on these orders, and NOT shut down the assembly line. Maybe now the other carriers will take another look at the aircraft. Way to go, Midwest Express! You made the right choice.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

With this order it looks like MEH will get deliveries through 2005-2007(One per quarter seem too few to me.) And we know that FL will probably keep up with their one/month schedule when they order options, so I'm guessing that the 717 line will be running at least through 2005.
