CX May Cut Routes 7 Close Stations.

Tue Oct 23, 2001 8:44 pm

talking with my colleagues today, a senior airport manager staff told us that CX is plannign to suspend routes that are making no profits.Told us that Cairns, Istanbul and 2 indian destinations Mumbai and Dehli are in the list. This reaction is because Cathay will not cut large amounts on staff, but released the no-pay leaves to replace the proposal of cutting staff.

Also, CX are planning to change flights that are code-shared with Vietnam Airlines to be operated by an entirely Vietnam Airlines fleet to reduce cost. Also, CX might reduce more flights, and Sydney, Singapore and Surabaya are in the list.

However, Sapporo will be launched as remained, but Ridayh will be postponed. No further details if it will be released, well too bad can't make a trip to Saudi!

Cheers,
Edwards

Hong Kong-India was in a fierce competition earlier this year...When UA re-launched HKG-DEL and CX launched HKG-DEL...Air India launched Chennai-Hong Kong...

I wonder how's Air India doing between Hong Kong and India...

By the way, as I mentioned earlier, Sapporo will be a re-launched flight, because CX pulls out Sapporo around 1998 or 1999.

I guess the destinations which CX pulls out are mainly middle-east is because of the uncertainties in that area? And Cairns is losing another international airline, after Cairns lost MAS and SIA.

I reckon 3 airlines flying HKG-DEL is way too much.Is there really such a demand?Obviously not.
Not just Air India, Cathay is not doing good on the route. But Air India's flight continues to Narita...maybe that would help a bit. However in Singapore, SQ mantains at a acceptable capacity as lots of Indians live in Singapore, as you know Singapore is a multi-racial city, with different race of people living together.Demand is obviously a BIT higher than Hong Kong - Dehli.

I always wondered why SQ pulled out of Cairns...they were not doing that bad on the Singapore - Cairns route.Singapore also offered flights to Cairns vs Darwin, and Darwin is also gone.Too bad......

Best Regards

The flights between India and Hong Kong are always full. The demand is not the issue - yields are. Most of these aircraft fly in regional 2-class configs. with heavy predatory discounting even in J-Class. Now, after Sep. 11, there are fewer passengers flying so the low yields have disappeared.

Full?Are you sure?
Well nevermind no arguments just wondering.
If it was full...UA won't have pulled out and now there are news saying CX is gonna pull out.
Anyways...let's see.

Flights can be full but if you're flying at a loss, then that could be the reasoning.

Delhi-London was once flown by UA and AC. But both cancelled out even though the flights were quite full. The trouble is the high volume of discounting done in India and the resulting yield is next to zero.

I know that SQ discounts heavily too and one can buy a BOM-SIN-LHR-SIN-BOM ticket for about 20% less that a BOM-LHR-BOM ticket in J class!

well talking about Loading....NRT, SEL are doing quite bad on CX...will she consider to reduce their frequency? For Vietnam ports....it used to be very profitable though. Sin? yes they shd hv reduced the frequency years ago.....thier flights are always 30-40% empty year round. Well Looks like only the airlines in the Mainland China (I'll count KA as one of the Chinese airlines)still survive....any comments on that?

I think the mainland chinese flights have not been affected at all, or at least to a minimum. I flew HKG - Beijing two days ago, it was the same as usual, before the 9-11 incident....

I do hope they won't cancel the Cairns route just yet. I have a flight Late Jan 2002, to fly Brisbane to HKG, via Cairns

No idea rite now.
Leaving tomorrow for duty so i'll better post something until i get back on Friday!
Seems that CX can't make any decision rite now, maybe after Christmas they'll have announcements.People travel to Cairns and Istanbul for holidays in Christmas, and CX is considering what to do with the 2 routes. For India, possiblity is very high to see the off. Also, just got news that 2 non-profitting routes might be cut, Fukouka & Cebu, and the Cebu route might be transfered to KA.

Keep you updated when i get back.

Cheers,
Edwards
