Air Canada's 2nd Low Cost Airline - "loco" Coming!

Wed Oct 24, 2001 10:45 am

Air Canada will start its second low costs, no-frills airline called Air Canada Loco will launch around next year. Right now they are planning to start this new airline early next January. It will still be based in YYZ, but will serve the different market than Air Canada Tango. AC Tango will be focused on sun-destinations. Let's wait for the up-coming press releases about this!!! It was scheduled to be launched in late this year, but due to the September 11th incident, they have postponed the plan to a later date... But of course, it'll all be depending on its financial situation!

Just to share with you guys, thought you guys might be interested! Big grin

Why do they need two low cost airlines? Surely that just increases costs!!

Well, different airline can serve different market. Let's say one for sun destinations, mainly for leasure. The other for domestic and transborder, for price sensitive business and leasure travellers. (That's what I have understood, and what my personal opinion! Big grin )I think that makes a lotta sense! But just hope that they will have enough cash!  Smile

Air Canada should fire their marketing department. "loco"... what is up with that? Then there is the planned YVR based "zip" or "jetz" or whatever horible name they plan to stick on it.

These names are just bad, who thought of them? A 5 year old child?

and I'm shure their next low cost airline will be called "merde" or something like it. All this has to be a joke.

Its a great idea to have a vacation airline..AC has several Carribean routes out from YYZ and YUL..It would be an excellent idea to offer more Y space..as I believe many frequent flyer and non-rev's occupy J seats....

They are launching a variety of Cuban routes, a few to the Cayman Island, Puerto Rico and so on..with a low cost structure..AC could make a few dollars here and there.

I think AC has one of the highest cost structure per passenger in all of North America, and the hemmorhage of 10 million bucks a day, is pretty much justified by this, and other debts that owed!

Hmmmm....perhaps AC Loco should not take over the routes to MEX, Cuba etc if 'loco' is Spanish for 'crazy'.

I like AC Merde actually......whatever 'merde' means!

Southern sun destinations such as Cuba will be covered by Tango. And Merde is a French word, it does not mean good! :P

Take care,

Why dosn't AC introduce low cost no-frills service to regional markets as well? The major airports are already so over-served that its ridicouleus. Take YYC for example, you have Westjet, C3, Air Tansat, Tango and places like YKA have to suffer with ACs outragous fares and crappy aircraft which are late 50% of the time or canceled altogether. This is really pissing me off, but what they hell nobody understands what im trying to say anyhow.

Hey, I would be happy to see Air Canada Merde as long as it was based at YUL; we need something new! =)

wolfy, I thought tis discount carrier (unlike Tango) was supposed to be based at YVR? This, I believe is what Air Canada has said. (To compete with WEstjet better). Has this changed?
Next flight.... who knows.

Hmmm... for your information, Air Canada Loco will basically be operating as WestJet on the west coast, so I guess maybe ther is a point now?  Smile I think it is a very good concept, diff airline fighting for diff market, just hope that they will have enough cash and do well!

Again, Air Canada Tango will be focused on the South.

YKA.....you raise a good point...it can indeed be frustrating for small markets to see poor service and high fares....while YYC (for example) gets lots of competition and low fares......that's just the machinations of the free market though...airlines are more willing to lower fares to hang onto market share in larger markets like YYC.

Shouldn't the city fathers in YKA be looking to upgrade the ILS system sooner? Then WJ can enter the market correct??

They cant instal the glidepath due to signal degradation caused by the mountains so theres no hope of westjet or any low fare carrier ever coming to YKA  Sad

I dont know why I still care since Im moving to Europe 10th of december but I suppose living in one place for 8 years like I did here in the 'loops can make you sentimental. I'm only sorry I'll miss the F28's that are due here 15th of december. So many years of waiting to see jet service and now I'll miss it by five days Sad

What do you mean by Tango going after the Southern Sun destinations..

On their website, all they mention is Florida from YUL/YYZ....and I think this AC Loco business is pure b.s, unless its some kind of attempt to lower their costructure in order to make money on low-yiled routes to the Carribean. In Canada, given the right fare, people will travel donw south EN MASSE....and I think TANGO will achieve high load factor to all Florida destinations.....not sure about the yul-yyz ..

Here's my question:

If CO Lite, UA Shuttle, US Airways Metrojet, LH Express (and I'm sure many others like these) have all failed, why is AC making Tango, considering the history of this type of airline?

First it was Jetz Airdirect, then Loco.

Brightest ideas for airline names since someone decided to start up a U.S. airline called Kiwi. An airline named after a creature that spends its life unable to get off the ground -- go figure!

Why not just rip off Telus' marketing idea, call the airline AC Cool, and use penguins to promote it?

YKA, that's interesting about the ILS system - Kelowna Airport is hemmed in by mountains (I've been there), but yet handles jet a/c traffic, so it must have an ILS system. Kamloops shouldn't be any different even with the deeper valleys. Surely there must be ILS systems specially developed for use in mountainous regions, so is it possible that high cost might be the real reason, rather than technology?

Wolfy - Is all this just for a prank or something? Frankly, I don't think AC is in any position, financial or otherwise, to come up with a second low cost carrier.

According to Westjet, the reason they are able to serve YLW without a glidepath is because the area is more opened up, hence a safer approach.

If your interested why they can't instal an glidepath at YKA, look at the cirlced mountain. It is according to NavCanada the one causing the signel degredation past 8km of the airport, making the glidepath unusable. I dont know why this is such a problem since a/c always fly the base leg ahead of that mountain anyhow(turninng to the rwy 26 at the NDB)...but anyhow.

YKA, thanks for bringing attention to the, er, 'mountainous' problem.

(look it`s apparent how much this is something you've been waiting to see resolved for quite some time, I only hope where ever you wind up in Europe there're gonna be jets--and big ones-- aplenty and nearby)

Every word Wolfy wrote is true. Air Canada 'Loco' is the parent company.

I think the low-cost airline is based in YVR, that's what AC said before.

Has Air Canada gone "loco". Ahhhh.... Air Canada Tango is almost as bad, but not quite. What's wrong with a normal name something like Canadian, or something simple like Jetz.

It can't be called "Merde". That is the motto of mainline, at least in my (several years ago) experience. Perhaps the influx of the CP workforce has improved this somewhat.
