What is the purpose for having the nose BLACK in the old days?

I would love to know the answer to this. Also, does anyone know, why did BA paint all their 757s with the black ring on the nose? I think it looks awful and I just wondered if there was any purpose for it?

Good question, Jiml1126 - no idea!

I was told that the ring on BA's 757s (and afaik also on their 737s) is a sort of protection against lightning flash. But I'm not sure about that.

The black ring with a white cross on it on BA 757s were aircraft involved in MLS trials a while ago.

I guess it's better than brown-nosing!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Note that in the AA fleet all of their original MD-80's have the black nose, however the TWA MD-80's in the new livery do not have the black nose. I believe it has something to do with paint, reflection, and the radar dome.

As you know if you get into a car on a hot sunny day with dark seats instead of light colours, black releases and absorbs radiation (radar) better. This was more important in the older days of radar. New liveries take into account that this `helper' is no longer necessary.

Yes, the BA 757 black ring signified a trial with a Microwave Landing System.

Isn't that spot where the radar of the plane is located?

Special paint for the radar. I would venture that the ones that aren't have a color that is part of the radome itself and not painted on.

I love black noses...they make the plane look so "retro"

The reason is that you cannot paint radomes with metalic colors (i.e. aluminum, silver, etc.) that contain certain metals. That's why most airlines don't include metalic colors in their paint scheme over the radome or just paint it another color. Certain paints would interfere with the radar becuase of the metals used in them.

Virgin Atl. paints their noses silver. So that can't be true.

DL's aircraft with the old colours still have that.
